Job Description
The Accountant will be responsible for:
Managing daily financial transactions, including payments, receipts, and reconciliations.
Maintaining accurate and up-to-date accounting records using SWRW’s approved accounting system.
Ensuring all financial activities comply with internal financial policies and donor requirements.
Supporting the preparation of project and organizational budgets in collaboration with program teams.
Monitoring budget utilization and providing regular financial forecasts and variance analyses.
Alerting management of any significant financial risks or deviations from the budget.
Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management, donors, and partners.
Preparing donor-specific financial statements, ensuring adherence to contract terms and reporting templates.
Assisting in the preparation of audited financial statements and liaising with external auditors during audits.
Ensuring compliance with Ugandan financial regulations, SWRW internal policies, and donor agreements.
Implementing and enforcing robust financial controls to safeguard organizational assets.
Maintaining and regularly reviewing the fixed asset register.
Processing monthly payroll, ensuring timely and accurate salary payments.
Remitting statutory deductions (PAYE, NSSF) to relevant authorities.
Maintaining up-to-date payroll records and ensuring confidentiality of salary information.
Reviewing and verifying all invoices, quotations, and payment requests for accuracy and completeness.
Ensuring all procurements and payments comply with SWRW’s financial and procurement policies.
Supporting the administration and procurement team with financial advice during procurement processes.
Managing cash flow to ensure availability of funds for project activities.
Monitoring bank balances, preparing bank reconciliations, and addressing any discrepancies promptly.
Managing petty cash and ensuring regular reconciliations.
Working closely with project managers to ensure correct financial management of projects.
Providing training or technical support to non-finance staff on financial procedures and compliance.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Manage daily financial transactions and maintain accurate records.
Ensure compliance with financial policies and donor requirements.
Support budget preparation and monitor budget utilization.
Prepare financial reports and statements for management and donors.
Ensure compliance with Ugandan financial regulations and donor agreements.
Implement financial controls and manage payroll processes.
Support procurement processes and manage cash flow.
Provide financial training to non-finance staff.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
Full or part professional accounting qualification (e.g., CPA, ACCA) is a MUST.
Minimum of 3–5 years' experience in accounting roles, preferably in an NGO or donor-funded environment.
Knowledge of donor regulations (USAID, EU, GIZ, UN, etc.) is desirable.
Key Skills and Competencies:
Strong knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
High attention to detail, strong analytical and organizational skills.
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or similar).
Good organizational and time management skills.
Integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Ability to work independently and under pressure.
