Job Description

Job Title:  Community Based Facilitator – 6 Fresher Positions

Organisation: Community Empowerment for Rural Development (CEFORD)

Duty Station:  Yumbe, Uganda

The Community Based Facilitators (CBFs) is responsible for delivering direct support and guidance to farmers in refugee and host communities, focusing on the promotion of climate-smart and regenerative agriculture. The CBF plays a vital role in building sustainable livelihoods, enhancing community resilience, Conflict Transformation and fostering inclusive community participation in agricultural and environmental activities

Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

  • Train farmers on climate-smart agriculture techniques, including soil health improvement, water management, and crop diversification.

  • Organize and lead community dialogue sessions, peace forums, and mediation activities.

  • Train local peace committees and community leaders on non-violent conflict resolution techniques.

  • Liaise with local authorities, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders to identify and mitigate conflict triggers.

  • Facilitate hands-on learning by setting up demonstration plots that model best practices and Work closely with individual farmers and groups to ensure they understand, adopt, and benefit from sustainable farming methods that improve yields and enhance resilience to climate change.

  • Conduct regular visits to farmers’ fields to provide on-the-ground support and address challenges in real-time and guide farmers in implementing regenerative practices, such as agroforestry and composting, and troubleshoot issues related to crop health, soil fertility, and pest management.

  • Foster a learning environment where farmers feel supported in experimenting with and integrating new techniques.

  • Facilitate the formation and ongoing activities of Farmer groups within the community.

  • Organize group meetings and practical workshops that encourage collaborative learning, peer support, and collective problem-solving.

  • Use farmer groups as a platform for sharing knowledge on climate-smart agriculture and resilience-building techniques, helping farmers adopt practices that are ecologically and economically sustainable.

  • Actively engage community members, including local leaders, to raise awareness on the importance of sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.

  • Organize community events and informational sessions to build local interest and buy-in for project activities, ensuring that marginalized groups, such as women and youth, are included and encouraged to participate in project activities to create a more resilient and inclusive agricultural community.

  • Systematically collect data on farmers’ crop production, land use, and adoption of recommended practices. Document and Submit timely and accurate reports, the progress and impact of project activities, including successes and challenges to the Project Officer, contributing to overall project monitoring, evaluation, and learning.

  • Assist farmers in connecting with input suppliers, markets, and financial services, helping them secure necessary resources for sustainable farming.

  • Introduce farmers to basic financial literacy skills and encourage the formation of savings groups or VSLAs to build financial resilience.

  • Support farmers in understanding market demands, improving product quality, and finding avenues for value addition.

  • Promote the participation of women, youth, and other vulnerable groups in all agricultural and project activities and Work to understand and address the unique barriers that these groups face, fostering an inclusive approach to resource access, training, and decision-making.

  • Ensure that activities encourage equitable involvement and empower community members across all social demographics.

  • Share timely and accurate climate and weather information through various communication channels, such as local radio and mobile platforms, to assist farmers in making informed agricultural decisions.

  • Educate farmers on how to interpret climate data and adapt their practices to mitigate risks associated with unpredictable weather patterns and climate impacts.

  • Support community dialogue sessions to address potential conflicts over resources, such as land access and water usage, fostering a culture of cooperation and peaceful coexistence.

  • Work closely with refugee and host communities to encourage resource-sharing agreements that benefit all parties and reduce tensions, contributing to a harmonious community environment.

  • Track the community’s adoption of sustainable practices, such as soil conservation and water management, and monitor the health of local ecosystems

  • Encourage farmers and households to implement practices that protect natural resources and improve resilience to climate impacts.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies

  • Certificate or Diploma in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Community Development, or a related field.

  • Practical experience with climate-smart/resilient agriculture, community engagement, and/or extension work.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups.

  • Ability to train and mobilize community members and facilitate group learning.

  • Commitment to promoting gender equity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.

  • Familiarity with local languages and cultures is a plus.
