About the Organisation

The Uganda Police Force is the national police organization of Uganda, headed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The current IGP is Abbas Byakagaba, who took over from former IGP Geoffrey Tumusiime on 18 May 2024. Recruitment to the force occurs annually.

History

The Uganda Police Force was established in 1906 by the British administration and was initially called the Uganda Armed Constabulary, primarily tasked with quelling riots and unrest. On 25 May 1906, Captain (later Brigadier General) William F.S. Edwards arrived in Uganda and became the first Inspector General of the Uganda Protectorate Police. He was known as a stern disciplinarian and an excellent administrator. Edwards served as IGP until 1908 and continued in administrative roles until his retirement in 1922.
