Co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize, Humanity & Inclusion (the new name of Handicap International) is a 40-year-old independent and impartial organization working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster.
We work alongside people with disabilities and individuals experiencing extreme hardship, acting and bearing witness to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.
HI in Uganda is currently implementing development and humanitarian interventions in six sectors/thematic areas: Livelihood, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Physical and Functional Rehabilitation, Inclusive Education, Inclusive Health, and Inclusive Humanitarian Action (IHA) to improve access and quality of services to the most vulnerable people including persons with disabilities promoting a more inclusive and harmonious society.
Project Background
INSPIRE (Inclusive Norms, Support, and Promoting Inclusive Reproductive Empowerment) project is aimed at sustainably enhancing access to reproductive health rights and services for persons with disabilities in the Nakivale refugee settlement, one of the largest refugee settlements in the world

Ensure planning and field coordination of project activities, especially in the area of case management and protection, with internal and external stakeholders

  • Participate in planning, budgeting, monitoring, and evaluating social work activities in the community

  • Participate in the weekly or monthly HI activity planning meetings

  • Develop daily, weekly, and monthly field activity plans

  • Participate in field activities with the project team


Implement field activities in collaboration with other consortium partners respecting the referral pathway

Take the lead role in conducting weekly case management meetings with other project staff to ensure all services are received and followed up to closure.

  • Implement, facilitate, and follow up project activities especially with regards to case management and protection following the project implementation plan

  • Conduct a holistic assessment of children identified by the project therapists in need of protection support.

  • Organize the lists of identified supported persons, coming from community resource people, community structures and institutions, external referrals received and direct identification.


Act as caseworker:


  • Assess the basic and specific needs of the beneficiaries, their caregivers and their families, giving

  • particular attention to any protection concerns.

  • Develop a case management profile of the child/caregiver according to the situation and

  • determine needs and goals, and intervention (Person-centered approach) in collaboration with the beneficiary, his/her caregiver/family and the project technical team.

  • Develop an individual/familial case action plan according to the needs and limits of the project design

  • Fill approved assessment forms and referral forms as needed

  • Organize regular case follow-up and update case follow-up forms according to documentation guidelines

  • Discharge individuals according to agreed discharge criteria

  • Coordinate an Inclusive case management plan including individual, treatment, and maintaining ongoing contact with relevant actors’ link to the child/caregiver’s needs based on the plan of action

  • Link with different stakeholders in the community and participate in relevant coordination meetings in the settlement (in coordination with the project team)

  • Manage and implement activities to prevent and respond to children violence and gender-based violence


Refer the supported person to other services when needed:

  • Identify needs for referrals to other relevant stakeholders and monitor referrals conducted in coordination with the other project staff.

  • Recognize emergency situations or situations that need immediate medical care or protection measures and react in consequence making efforts to ensure that beneficiaries receive the appropriate services.

  • Identify different referral points and processes within the settlement and host communities

Participate in data collection, reporting, and other MEAL activities of the project

  • Document any protection concerns and report them to your line manager

  • Ensure daily quantitative and qualitative reporting through the tools (assessment form, follow-up from, discharge, referral form, and donation certificate) are in place

  • Maintain complete data for each person, including detailed descriptions of services provided and evolution of the case; ensuring that all case files, and other records, strictly comply with policies, regulations, and procedures

  • Ensure confidentiality and respect all guidelines and documentation within the project

  • Contribute to the organization of the weekly plan within the multidisciplinary team i.e., PT, OT, Speech therapist and Psychologist.

  • Produce weekly activity reports and contribute to the development of project reports using HI Uganda MEAL templates

  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of each individual’s case and data analysis in collaboration with the PM and MEAL officer

  • Participate in project review workshops

  • Know, understand, apply and respect the HI code of conduct and ethics, HI mandate and values, HI rules and operating procedure, HI policies (child protection policy, policy and mechanism for the prevention of and fight against bribery, the protection of beneficiaries from sexual exploitation and abuse policy) and make sure they are known, understood, applied and respected by its team

  • Know, understand, apply and respect HI security rules and make sure they are known, understood and applied by her/his team.

  • Contributes to the program’s emergency preparedness actions and, during an emergency, adapts his/her work modality to contribute to HI’s effective humanitarian response

  • Must hold an Honors Degree in Social Work and Social Administration (SWASA)

  • Bachelor’s degrees related to MHPSS, community development, Community-Based Rehabilitation, and other disability studies

  • At least three (3) years of experience as a social worker

  • Worked in both hospital and community settings and with children

  • Prior experience as a caseworker

  • Prior experience on child protection and/or gender-based violence activities

  • Experience working with others in a coordinated way

  • Experience in the fields of disability, inclusion, access to services, and social development

  • Experience in adapting the interview method to the person interviewed (based on factors of exclusion, with a focus on disability, gender, and age).

  • Experience working in the refugee context

Personal Skills & Technical Competencies required

  • Effective communications with a wide range of people, including parents and children with disabilities, other service providers

  • Develop an enabling relationship, promoting the self-determination of the supported person

  • Practical knowledge of social work environment (available services, tools…)

  • Able to analyse, think critically and creatively, and make decisions

  • know what (inclusive) case management is and know why it is important for persons with disabilities and vulnerable people to access services

  • Aware of existing inequalities and social obstacles faced by children with disability or developmental delays and their caregivers

  • Local language of the area a plus

  • Able to manage stress and emotion

  • Flexible and open to change, adapt to cultural differences

  • Be accountable and work with integrity

  • Effective interpersonal relationship

  • Gender and disability sensitive
