Job Description
Job Title: Fire & Gas (F&G) Engineer – Electrical
Project: East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP)
Location: Uganda (Site-Based)
Contract Duration: 18 Months
Start Date: October 2025 (or per project schedule)
Project Overview
The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) is a major infrastructure project transporting crude oil from Uganda's oil fields to the Tanzanian coast. Given the hazardous nature of oil transportation, the project requires stringent safety systems integrated into its electrical and control infrastructure.
Schneider Electric’s Role
As the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Telecommunications Systems (EITS) integrator, Schneider Electric is responsible for the full lifecycle—engineering, installation, testing, and commissioning—of all electrical systems. This includes robust Fire & Gas (F&G) detection systems to ensure operational safety in high-risk environments such as substations, pump stations, and terminals.
Position Summary
The Fire & Gas (F&G) Engineer is responsible for the deployment, configuration, testing, and commissioning of all fire and gas detection systems across EACOP facilities. This includes flame, smoke, heat, and gas detectors, alarm interfaces, and control panel programming. The role ensures compliance with project-specific safety standards, hazardous area classifications, and Schneider Electric's global engineering standards.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Supervise the installation and verify field performance of F&G devices (detectors, horns, beacons, control panels).
Configure and test alarm logic, ESD (Emergency Shutdown) signals, and suppression system interfaces.
Validate system design layouts and coverage against hazardous area classifications and project drawings.
Collaborate with SCADA, ECS, and instrumentation teams to ensure integrated system functionality.
Conduct loop checks, cause & effect testing, and final system validation per commissioning protocols.
Ensure adherence to international fire & gas safety standards (e.g., NFPA, IEC 60079, ISA).
Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for F&G-related systems.
Troubleshoot system faults or spurious alarms during startup and handover phases.
Maintain all F&G technical documentation, including redline drawings, test reports, and O&M manuals.
Support training and system handover to client or operations teams.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, or a related Engineering discipline.
Experience:
Minimum of 4–6 years of direct experience in fire & gas system commissioning in oil & gas or hazardous industrial environments.
Industry Exposure:
Experience in energy infrastructure, terminals, refineries, or pipeline projects requiring F&G systems.
Technical Proficiency
Familiar with F&G detection equipment (flame, smoke, gas detectors – both point and open-path).
Strong grasp of hazardous area classification and associated equipment selection.
Capable of reading and applying cause & effect matrices, zoning diagrams, and ESD logic.
Experienced in loop testing, signal validation, and alarm verification.
Understanding of F&G system integration with SCADA, PLCs, and shutdown controls.
Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and basic use of system configuration tools.
Personal Attributes
Safety-conscious and proactive in identifying and mitigating operational risks.
Strong coordination and communication skills across multidisciplinary teams.
Methodical approach to testing and documentation.
Calm and decisive during commissioning or emergency simulations.
Deep understanding of life-safety systems and regulatory compliance expectations.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in fire & gas detection systems or NFPA/ISA safety standards.
Prior experience with Schneider Electric F&G solutions or similar OEM platforms.
Multilingual capabilities (English required; Swahili or French an asset).
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Timely completion of loop and cause & effect testing.
Reduction in false alarms or system errors during commissioning.
Compliance with international and client-specific safety standards.
Accuracy and completeness of system documentation and handover package.
Successful integration with SCADA and shutdown systems.
Work Conditions
Field-based across EACOP substations, pump stations, and terminal sites in Uganda.
Work in classified hazardous zones with full PPE and adherence to HSE protocols.
May involve working at height, in confined spaces, and during extended or rotating shifts.
High-pressure phases during energization, testing, and commissioning.
