Job Description
Job Title: Supervisor – Workshop
Department/Programme: Factory
Section/Project: Mechanical
Reports To: Superintendent – Workshop
Supervises: Machinist I & II, Welder I, Blacksmith
Overall Purpose of the Job
The Workshop Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all activities within the machine shop. The role ensures efficient operation, quality workmanship, effective utilization of resources, and adherence to safety standards.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, and performance to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
Receive and review job orders, determine material requirements, and raise requisitions for approval.
Inspect completed jobs of a complex nature to verify quality and workmanship.
Ensure optimal use of spare parts and workshop materials.
Assign tasks to staff members and provide technical guidance where necessary.
Support and supervise on-the-job training programs in collaboration with the Technical Training Officer.
Ensure availability of necessary technical tools and instruments for task execution.
Routinely check machine shop equipment, including lathes, shapers, mills, and grinders, to confirm proper maintenance and accuracy.
Verify the quality and tolerance of spare parts used in the machine shop.
Maintain accurate records of completed jobs, material usage, and overall workshop production for monitoring and control purposes.
Prepare and submit routine and ad hoc reports to the Workshop Superintendent.
Oversee workshop cleanliness and maintain high standards of housekeeping.
Enforce compliance with company safety, health, and environmental policies.
Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Workshop Superintendent or Management.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering & Manufacturing Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
A Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution is also acceptable.
Experience, Skills, and Competencies
For degree holders: A minimum of two years’ relevant experience.
For diploma holders: A minimum of five years’ relevant experience.
Prior experience managing shift workers is an added advantage.
Strong supervisory, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in computer applications is essential for this role.
