Supervises: Supervisor – Boiler DCS, Supervisor – Turbine DCS, Supervisor – Boiler Field, Shift Chemist, Overseers – Bagasse Yard
Overall Purpose of the Job
The Superintendent – Shift leads and directs the operations of the co-generation (COGEN) section during shifts. This role ensures the correct and proper operation of COGEN plant equipment before and during startup, normal and abnormal operations, and shutdown. The equipment under the Superintendent’s responsibility includes high-pressure boilers and auxiliaries, steam turbines and auxiliaries, bagasse conveyors, compressors, water treatment systems, ash handling equipment, and bagasse handling mobile equipment.
The incumbent is expected to optimize plant performance, troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, carry out simple maintenance tasks, or ensure maintenance is performed by mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation service departments. Additionally, thorough plant inspections during outages and responsibility for allocated maintenance during crop or off-crop periods are key duties. This ensures smooth, efficient operations with strong operational efficiency to meet management targets.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Ensure team safety by enforcing proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety gear; responsible for ensuring subordinate compliance.
Enforce adherence to permits and safety procedures to prevent accidents, including issuing work permits.
Perform pre-startup preparations and plant inspections to verify equipment readiness and good condition.
Supervise and carry out plant startup, stabilization, and normal operations of the entire COGEN plant during shifts, following correct procedures. Equipment includes bagasse conveying systems, boilers, steam turbines, cooling towers, and water treatment.
Supervise and perform safe and proper shutdowns of COGEN plant equipment to prevent damage when required.
Manage emergency operations effectively to avoid equipment damage and ensure staff safety.
Ensure all shift operational and production targets are consistently met according to management requirements.
Monitor malfunctioning equipment to ensure timely attention from maintenance departments including mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation.
Supervise and perform simple operational maintenance tasks within the capability of operational staff during shifts or off-crop periods.
Proactively identify and recommend improvements to optimize plant operations and meet management targets.
Manage team performance through regular operational inspections and walkabouts, taking corrective actions where needed.
Identify staff not meeting operational standards and ensure training or interventions are provided to raise performance.
Ensure adequate staffing coverage for all shift positions to avoid operational interruptions, managing leave schedules appropriately.
Maintain good housekeeping of equipment and workstations within the area of responsibility.
Perform any other tasks assigned by management.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent from a recognized institution.
Experience, Skills & Competencies
Minimum of five years’ hands-on experience as a Superintendent or equivalent in boiler COGEN power plant operations (67 bar or higher), preferably in a sugar factory.
Five years’ experience with Yokogawa DCS operations for boilers and steam turbines.
Working knowledge of mechanical maintenance for boilers and turbines.
Familiarity with maintenance of mechanical equipment such as pumps, gearboxes, valves, conveyors, compressors, etc.
Understanding of boiler makeup water treatment plant operations and boiler water chemistry.
Ability to train subordinates in boiler operations.
Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly in English with subordinates and superiors.
Interpersonal Skills: Ability to collaborate effectively with other section members to improve overall operational performance.
People Management: Capable of managing and motivating subordinates fairly and constructively, with the ability to take disciplinary action when necessary.
