Lira University is one of the public Universities in Uganda. It started as a Constituent College of Gulu University in 2009 and attained autonomy as a fully-fledged Public University through an Act Parliament under Statutory Instrument 2015 No. 35 on the 16th July, 2015.
It was established on a niche of training students in Health Sciences. It has the first University Teaching Hospital in Uganda.

Lira University is a Public University pursuant to Statutory Instrument No. 35 of 16 July 2015 under The University's and other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 (as amended 2006). Applications are invited from suitably qualified and interested candidates for the following post.

  • Transcription: Use shorthand or stenographic skills to accurately transcribe spoken words from meetings, dictations, court proceedings, or other events into written documents.

  • Typing and Document Preparation: Type letters, reports, memos, and other documents from handwritten notes, audio recordings, or direct dictation, ensuring accuracy and proper formatting.

  • Shorthand Notation: Take dictation using shorthand or a stenotype machine and then transcribe the notes into clear and accurate text.

  • Record Keeping and Filing: Organize and maintain files, both physical and digital, ensuring documents are properly stored, easily accessible, and up to date.

  • Scheduling and Calendar Management: Manage appointments, meetings, and other events for supervisors or departments, ensuring efficient use of time and resources.

  • Correspondence Management: Draft and respond to emails, letters, and other forms of communication on behalf of executives or managers.

  • Meeting Support: Attend meetings to take notes or minutes and prepare summaries or detailed reports for distribution to relevant stakeholders.

  • Administrative Support: Provide general administrative and clerical support, including answering phones, managing office supplies, and assisting with other tasks as needed.

  • Confidentiality Management: Handle sensitive information with discretion, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with privacy policies.

  • Office Coordination: Assist in coordinating office activities and operations to ensure efficiency and adherence to company policies.

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Some employers may prefer candidates with post-secondary education, such as a certificate or diploma in secretarial studies, office administration, or a related field.

  • Training in Shorthand/Stenography: Specialized training in shorthand or stenography is essential. This can be acquired through vocational schools, community colleges, or specialized training programs.

  • Typing Proficiency: High typing speed (usually 60 words per minute or more) with a high degree of accuracy. Proficiency in using stenographic machines or software may also be required.

  • Experience: Previous experience in a similar role, such as a secretary, administrative assistant, or stenographer, is often preferred. Experience in legal, medical, or executive environments can be particularly valuable.

  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in using office software, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with transcription software or stenography equipment.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for drafting correspondence, taking dictation, and interacting with colleagues and clients.

  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in transcription, document preparation, and record-keeping.

  • Organizational Skills: Effective organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks, manage schedules, and maintain records efficiently.

  • Confidentiality and Professionalism: Ability to handle sensitive information with a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism.

  • Adaptability and Flexibility: Ability to adapt to varying work demands and handle unexpected changes or urgent tasks.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a range of individuals, including executives, clients, and other staff members.
