Duties and Responsibilities

  • Building Inspections: Conducting inspections of new construction, renovations, and alterations to ensure compliance with building codes, regulations, and approved plans.

  • Permitting: Reviewing building permit applications, plans, and documents to ensure compliance with relevant codes, ordinances, and regulations.

  • Code Enforcement: Enforcing building codes and regulations by addressing violations, issuing citations, and coordinating corrective actions with property owners and contractors.

  • Technical Expertise: Providing technical guidance and assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, and the public regarding building code requirements and compliance issues.

  • Documentation: Maintaining accurate records, reports, and documentation related to building permits, inspections, code enforcement actions, and correspondence.

  • Team Leadership: Supervising and providing guidance to junior building control officers and support staff, including assigning tasks, conducting training, and ensuring quality control.

  • Collaboration: Collaborating with other government agencies, departments, and stakeholders involved in the construction and development process, such as planning departments, fire departments, and zoning boards.

  • Policy Development: Participating in the development and revision of building codes, ordinances, policies, and procedures to promote safety, efficiency, and compliance within the built environment.

  • Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service by responding to inquiries, resolving complaints, and assisting the public with understanding and navigating the building permitting and inspection process.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, architecture, construction management, or a related field is typically required. Some positions may also require professional licensure or certification.

  • Experience: Several years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, code enforcement, construction management, or a related field, with demonstrated knowledge of building codes and regulations.

  • Certification: Certification as a Building Official, Building Inspector, or Plans Examiner may be required or preferred, depending on the jurisdiction and the specific responsibilities of the position.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in interpreting and applying building codes, ordinances, and construction standards. Familiarity with relevant software applications for plan review, inspection scheduling, and record-keeping.

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for preparing reports, communicating with stakeholders, and providing technical assistance to the public and other departments.

  • Leadership Abilities: Ability to effectively lead and supervise a team of building control officers and support staff, including providing direction, feedback, and training as needed.
