Job Description
Job Title: Principal Mechanical Engineer – Operations
Organization: Uganda Railway Corporation (URC)
Location: Uganda
Job Purpose:
The Principal Mechanical Engineer – Operations will oversee the availability, reliability, and safety of rolling stock and related mechanical assets essential to URC’s railway operations. This position combines strategic planning with hands-on operational management to ensure the efficient functioning of locomotives and rolling stock systems.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Lead operations and performance management for all mechanical assets
Ensure optimal availability and functionality of locomotives and rolling stock
Oversee safety, maintenance schedules, and compliance with engineering standards
Support modernization and digitalization of mechanical systems
Guide and mentor engineering teams across operations
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree (Honors) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Transportation Engineering – mandatory
Registered Engineer with UIPE or an equivalent professional body
At least 8 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with 4 years in a senior role within the rail or transport sector
Must be under 50 years of age
Key Skills & Competencies:
Strong leadership, supervision, and mentoring skills
Expertise in rolling stock systems and locomotive operations
Proficient in CMMS, ERP platforms, and IoT tools for asset management
Knowledge of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards and environmental compliance
Skilled in data analysis and reporting using MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Access
Capable of sound decision-making and effective crisis management
Excellent interpersonal and team-building abilities
Ability to lead cross-functional teams and perform under pressure
