Job Description

A physical planner, also known as an urban or regional planner, is responsible for shaping the physical development of communities, cities, and regions. Their work involves analyzing current conditions, identifying future needs, and creating plans and policies to guide land use, transportation, housing, and environmental conservation

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research and Analysis: Conducting research and gathering data on various aspects of the built and natural environment, such as population trends, land use patterns, transportation systems, infrastructure, and environmental resources.

  • Land Use Planning: Developing land use plans and zoning regulations to guide the location and intensity of development, including residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational areas. This may involve conducting land suitability analyses, considering environmental impacts, and engaging with stakeholders to balance competing interests.

  • Transportation Planning: Assessing transportation needs and developing plans to improve mobility, reduce congestion, and enhance connectivity. This may include designing transit systems, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and road networks to support sustainable and efficient transportation options.

  • Environmental Planning: Identifying and evaluating environmental resources, such as wetlands, forests, water bodies, and wildlife habitats, and developing strategies to protect and conserve these resources. This may involve conducting environmental assessments, mitigating impacts of development projects, and promoting sustainable land use practices.

  • Community Engagement: Engaging with community members, stakeholders, and interest groups to gather input, build consensus, and incorporate community preferences into planning decisions. This may involve organizing public meetings, workshops, surveys, and other outreach activities to solicit feedback and participation.

  • Policy Development: Developing planning policies, regulations, and guidelines to address various issues related to land use, development, housing, transportation, and sustainability. This may involve drafting comprehensive plans, zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, and other planning documents to guide decision-making and implementation.

  • Project Review and Permitting: Reviewing development proposals, site plans, and permit applications to ensure compliance with planning regulations, zoning codes, and environmental standards. This may involve conducting site inspections, assessing impacts on surrounding areas, and making recommendations to approving authorities.

  • GIS and Mapping: Utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) and mapping technologies to analyze spatial data, create maps, and visualize planning scenarios. This may involve mapping land use patterns, transportation networks, infrastructure assets, and environmental features to support planning efforts.

  • Policy Implementation and Monitoring: Collaborating with government agencies, developers, and community organizations to implement planning policies and projects. This may involve coordinating infrastructure investments, facilitating public-private partnerships, and monitoring progress towards achieving planning goals and objectives.

  • Professional Development: Staying informed about emerging trends, best practices, and innovations in urban and regional planning through continuing education, professional conferences, and networking opportunities.
