About the SHEDS Program
The She Data Science (SHEDS) program is a collaborative initiative between the African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data Intensive Sciences at Makerere University and the Institute of Global Health Sciences (IGHS) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), USA.
SHEDS is committed to empowering Ugandan women in health data science by addressing systemic barriers, fostering technical skills, and bridging the gap between data science and real-world public health applications.
In the context of growing datasets in health—from genomics to digital health records and environmental data—there is an urgent need to build inclusive capacity in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, gender disparities in STEM in Uganda continue to exclude many capable women from contributing to this fast-evolving field.
The SHEDS program seeks to close this gap by training and supporting women in data science and bioinformatics, ultimately translating their skills into biomedical and public health impact.
