Job Description
Job Title: Media Specialist (Photographer & Storyteller)
Organisation: Show Mercy International
Duty Station: Kaliiti, Wakiso, Uganda
Job Summary: We are looking for a born-again Christian with professional photography skills and a storyteller’s eye. This is more than just taking pictures—you will be in the field and in-house, capturing and communicating God’s transforming work in people and communities. You should have a creative mind, a passion for telling stories visually, and the initiative to suggest and pursue story ideas that inspire our partners and donors around the world.
If you love using photography to move hearts, have a strong testimony, and want to make an eternal impact, this could be your place.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Capture high-quality photos of people, landscapes, programs, and community life that highlight transformation and impact.
Spend time in the field—visiting programs, outreaches, and communities—to document authentic stories.
Proactively identify and suggest stories that can be told visually, working both independently and under direction from the Communications Manager.
Write short captions, summaries, or story drafts to accompany photos.
Edit and organize photos for use across donor updates, newsletters, social media, and reports.
Contribute to the development of story-driven content that connects with a Western donor audience.
Work closely with the Communications Manager to align photos with overall storytelling goals.
Occasionally support with basic video capture if possible (preferred but not required).
Help ensure all media content is stored, labeled, and accessible in organizational systems.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Born-again Christian with a strong testimony and heart for ministry.
Professional-level photography skills with a portfolio of people, events, and landscapes.
Understanding of storytelling in a nonprofit context (or willingness to learn).
Strong creative instincts—able to suggest story angles and capture meaningful, not just routine, moments.
Basic writing skills to support visual storytelling (captions, short descriptions, draft narratives).
Photo editing skills (Lightroom, Photoshop, or equivalent).
Experience with digital media tools for organizing and sharing content.
Team player—able to take direction but also work independently with initiative.
Comfortable working both in the field (programs, communities) and in-house.
Diploma or degree in Photography, Media, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
Minimum 2 years’ experience in professional photography (experience in nonprofit communications is an added advantage).
Video skills are an added bonus but not required.
