Job Description
The Legal Counsel will act as a Legal Business Partner to designated regions, providing practical advice on international programming operations, corporate and contractual matters, and governance issues. The role includes drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, supporting legal compliance (fraud, sanctions, anti-terrorism), and managing relationships with external legal advisors. The post holder will also lead certain legal team initiatives such as training, risk mitigation tools, and pro bono partnerships, and may provide line management or mentoring support to junior colleagues. This position requires strong legal expertise, fluency in French, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, global organization.

How to Apply
Act as Legal Business Partner to Country Offices in West and Central Africa (and/or other regions), providing timely, pragmatic legal support.
Provide legal advice to Global Teams on matters of global scope or implication.
Advise on legal aspects of scaling programming operations, especially in humanitarian crises.
Draft, review, and negotiate contracts (partnerships, procurement, services, frameworks with governments, UN agencies, private sector, NGOs).
Advise on governance requirements for a global organization.
Manage advice from external legal counsel and support stakeholders in applying recommendations.
Develop training, legal tools, and guidance to mitigate organizational risk.
Lead legal team initiatives, including pro bono partnerships and mentoring opportunities.
Advise on compliance issues (fraud, sanctions, anti-terrorism), independently or with the compliance team.
Provide line management or mentoring support to junior team members as required.
Essential
Qualified lawyer or barrister (UK or common law jurisdiction).
Minimum 6 years’ post-qualification experience in corporate/commercial, charity/not-for-profit, dispute resolution, or regulatory law.
Fluency in French (written and spoken) and strong communication skills in English.
Strong prioritization skills and ability to work independently.
Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
Constructive, calm, and collaborative approach, even under pressure.
Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Save the Children.
Desirable
Experience in employment, finance, data protection, intellectual property, or dispute resolution.
Experience operating in multiple jurisdictions and instructing overseas counsel.
Previous experience in international development, humanitarian, or charity sectors.
Proficiency in Spanish and/or Arabic.
