About the Organisation
Learning Alliance is a startup international NGO dedicated to foundational literacy. We partner with Ugandan primary schools to help every student master basic reading and writing skills—unlocking greater academic success and lifelong opportunity.
Using a proven approach called Structured Pedagogy, we equip teachers with step-by-step phonics lesson plans and provide regular, on-site coaching to build instructional excellence. Our mission is simple but ambitious: make classrooms joyful and effective, especially in low-resource settings.
In 2025, we’re piloting our program with 75 schools in Eastern Uganda. With a small, dynamic team of 9—including 6 full-time teacher coaches—we’re ready to test, learn, and scale. That’s where you come in.

Job Description
Position: Learning Innovation Associate / Manager
Organization: Learning Alliance
Location: Eastern Uganda (Jinja or Iganga), with periodic travel to Kampala
Start Date: Flexible (ASAP preferred)
Contract Type: Full-time (40 hours/week); Minimum 1-year commitment

The Role: Learning Innovation Associate / Manager
We’re looking for a motivated, entrepreneurial educator and strategist to join our leadership team and shape how our program evolves for greater impact. This is a high-ownership role, ideal for someone excited to use data, field insights, and experimentation to drive learning outcomes in real classrooms.
You’ll lead program innovation, mentor staff, and test scalable solutions. Whether it's developing better lesson plans, improving teacher support systems, or running A/B tests to evaluate new ideas—your work will directly influence what and how thousands of students learn.
Title (Associate or Manager) will depend on your experience.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
1. Program Diagnosis & Insight Gathering (20%)
Conduct weekly school visits to observe classrooms and training sessions.
Analyze program data and staff feedback to identify opportunities for improving student learning.
Act as the organization’s key observer and advisor on what’s working—and what’s not.
2. Content & Training Development (20%)
Design and test training materials for teachers and coaches.
Develop tools, talking points, and lesson content—possibly using generative AI.
Ensure all materials are simple, scalable, and based on evidence-based best practices.
3. Innovation Projects & A/B Testing (40%)
Lead experimental projects that improve program design, simplicity, and cost-effectiveness.
Example: Compare learning gains from adding student textbooks, or test new methods of delivering teacher support via WhatsApp.
Analyze results and make recommendations for scale.
4. Staff Mentorship & Leadership Support (10%)
Provide mentorship to the Learning Manager and coaches.
Co-lead weekly planning, data reviews, and team-building activities.
Champion staff input in program design.
5. Organizational Support (10%)
Contribute to additional leadership projects based on your skills and interests (e.g., social media, grant writing, tech vetting, hiring).
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Who Should Apply
You don’t need to meet every single qualification, but strong candidates will have:
Required Qualifications
At least 2 years’ experience as a classroom teacher, ideally with phonics.
Bachelor’s degree (any field); Master’s welcome but not required.
Fluent in English.
Legal ability to work in Uganda (we welcome Ugandan nationals and global professionals).
Preferred Experience
3–10 years total work experience.
Additional background in fields like program design, consulting, entrepreneurship, education innovation, or operations is highly valued.
Prior experience in low-resource or LMIC (low- and middle-income countries) settings.
