Ensure the proper handling of hazardous materials, if applicable, following all safety protocols and regulations. Use equipment such as forklifts or pallet jacks to move cargo when required.
Vehicle Operation:
Safely operate heavy trucks to transport goods over long distances, including highways and city streets.
Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew as needed.
Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspections:
Conduct thorough inspections of the truck before and after trips to ensure it is in good working condition.
Check for mechanical issues, tire pressure, oil levels, and other safety-related aspects.
Load and Unload Cargo:
Assist with the loading and unloading of cargo, ensuring that it is properly secured and balanced.
Verify the quantity and quality of goods being transported.
Compliance with Regulations:
Adhere to all federal Transportation (DOT) regulations regarding hours of service, weight limits, and safety standards.
Route Planning and Navigation:
Plan routes efficiently to meet delivery schedules and avoid delays.
Use GPS systems and maps to navigate and reach destinations safely and on time.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of deliveries, including bills of lading, trip reports, and fuel receipts.
Report any accidents, delays, or mechanical problems to the appropriate personnel.
Communication:
Communicate effectively with dispatchers, customers, and other drivers using CB radios, mobile phones, or other communication devices.
Provide updates on delivery status and any issues encountered on the road.
Cargo Handling:
Ensure the proper handling of hazardous materials, if applicable, following all safety protocols and regulations.
Use equipment such as forklifts or pallet jacks to move cargo when required.
Safety Practices:
Follow all safety protocols to protect yourself and others on the road.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary.
Customer Service:
Interact professionally with customers during pickups and deliveries.
Address customer inquiries and issues promptly and courteously.
Maintenance and Repair:
Perform basic maintenance tasks such as refueling, cleaning, and minor repairs.
Report major mechanical issues to maintenance personnel and schedule repairs as needed.
Fuel Management:
Monitor fuel consumption and refuel trucks as necessary.
Manage fuel efficiency by driving responsibly and minimizing idling time.
Excellent driving skills.
Basic knowledge of the mechanics of their truck and how to maintain it.
Knowledge of how to secure loads using load binders, chains and strops.
Knowledge of transport and related industry laws.
