Job Description
The ideal candidate will serve as a senior legal leader, driving the organization’s strategic litigation portfolio across Kenya’s judiciary and at regional levels. This position involves mentoring a legal team, overseeing litigation cases, advising on legal risk, and contributing to fundraising and institutional development. The Head of Strategic Litigation will lead impactful litigation aligned with thematic areas, ensure quality legal processes, engage in international human rights mechanisms, and guide policy through legal advocacy. The role also involves legal research, drafting legal documents, collaboration with advocacy partners, and engagement with external counsel.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Lead and expand the Strategic Litigation Unit, fostering legal excellence
Oversee and guide high-impact litigation aligned with thematic priorities
Represent the organization in courts and regional/international legal bodies
Conduct legal research and draft legal documents including briefs, memoranda, and amicus submissions
Provide legal advice on program and operational risks
Mentor junior lawyers, interns, and pro bono legal teams
Engage in advocacy and build strategic partnerships with legal and civil society actors
Lead fundraising initiatives and support institutional development
Participate in internal strategy meetings and policy development
Ensure adherence to organizational and donor policies
Guide legal compliance and risk mitigation strategies
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education and Certifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) and a Master’s Degree (LLM or equivalent)
Diploma in Law from Kenya School of Law (KSL)
Registered and practicing Advocate of the High Court of Kenya
Membership with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK)
Postgraduate Diploma in Law or Organizational Leadership is an added advantage
Experience:
Minimum of 10 years post-admission experience in legal practice
Proven strategic litigation experience at High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court levels
Prior leadership of legal teams, preferably in a human rights NGO
Experience working with international and regional legal mechanisms (e.g. African Court, EACJ)
Track record of using litigation to advance social justice
Skills and Competencies:
Strong research, writing, and advocacy skills
Deep understanding of human rights frameworks and public interest litigation
Familiarity with policy advocacy and rights-based program implementation
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
Strong organizational and project management skills
High emotional intelligence, integrity, and ability to lead under pressure
