Job Description
The Fisheries Electronic Monitoring Specialist will contribute to the design and implementation of TNC’s large-scale fisheries strategy in the WIO region. They will provide technical expertise and leadership in electronic fisheries monitoring, contribute to scientific research, and collaborate with both regional and global teams to ensure effective delivery of project outcomes. The specialist will build strategic partnerships with fisheries departments, private sector actors, civil society organizations, and coastal communities. They will also be involved in fundraising, stakeholder engagement, and capacity building, including training development. The role spans multiple African countries and requires excellent project management, technical communication, and partnership-building skills.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Support the development and implementation of the global fisheries strategy in the WIO region
Serve as a technical expert on electronic fisheries monitoring and data systems
Build capacity and lead stakeholder engagement initiatives across multiple countries
Design and deliver training programs and materials on fisheries monitoring and management
Coordinate with cross-functional teams in operations, finance, policy, communications, and science
Lead or contribute to fisheries-related scientific research and reporting
Foster partnerships with government, private sector, coastal communities, and NGOs
Participate in fundraising and proposal development efforts
Manage complex projects, including tracking deliverables, staff, timelines, and budgets
Represent TNC in technical meetings, workshops, and regional collaborations
Travel up to 25% for project work across the region and internationally
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in fisheries management, marine science, environmental science, or related field
Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in fisheries management or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience in stakeholder engagement, especially with government and industry partners
Experience in fisheries-related scientific research and understanding of ecosystem interactions
Familiarity with Western Indian Ocean regional fisheries context is essential
Skills and Competencies:
Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
Excellent written, spoken, and graphical communication skills in English
Additional language skills (e.g., Swahili, French, Spanish) are an advantage
Experience in training design and facilitation
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based tools
Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Strong negotiation, leadership, and relationship-building skills
Willingness and ability to travel up to 25%
