Position: Credit Risk Manager

Purpose of the Role:
The Credit Risk Manager is responsible for identifying, assessing, and managing credit risk across the institution. The role ensures strong loan portfolio performance, compliance with credit policies, and effective risk control implementation at the branch level. Additionally, the Credit Risk Manager supports Branch Heads in maintaining credit quality, minimizing losses, and fostering responsible lending practices.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
1. Credit Risk Management
Develop and implement credit risk policies and frameworks aligned with Hofokam’s risk appetite.
Identify and monitor emerging credit risks; recommend mitigation strategies.
Regularly review credit processes and loan products for relevance and robustness.
Oversee the loan approval framework, including high-risk credit decisions escalated from branches.
2. Branch Supervision
Conduct regular performance reviews with Branch Heads.
Ensure branches adhere to credit risk policies, quality standards, and portfolio growth targets.
Review branch portfolio health, delinquency trends, and operational compliance.
Conduct routine branch visits to assess risk practices and implement corrective measures.
Support underperforming branches through targeted interventions.
Promote a culture of performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Produce quarterly performance and leadership assessment reports.
3. Portfolio Quality Monitoring
Track and report on key portfolio metrics (e.g., PAR, NPLs, write-offs).
Analyze trends by product, sector, and region; recommend strategic adjustments.
Lead portfolio review meetings and propose corrective actions.
4. Loan Recovery and Collections Oversight
Supervise delinquency management efforts and follow-up on overdue accounts.
Assist in resolving complex recovery cases or restructuring efforts.
Monitor and evaluate collection strategies across branches.
5. Training and Capacity Building
Train and mentor loan officers and Branch Heads on credit risk management, credit analysis, and recovery.
Develop training materials and SOPs for credit and risk functions.
Promote ethical lending practices and a strong risk management culture.
6. Compliance and Operational Risk
Collaborate with Internal Audit and Compliance teams on audit findings.
Uphold principles of customer protection and responsible lending.
7. Reporting and Communication
Prepare regular credit risk reports for senior management.
Communicate credit risk strategies and updates across branch teams.
Coordinate with departments such as IT, Finance, and Legal on risk-related matters.
8. Performance Management
Drive leadership development and succession planning within the Credit Department.
Participate in recruitment and onboarding of credit staff.
Conduct regular performance appraisals and manage staff leave schedules.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
Quality of loan portfolio and provisioning levels
Business profitability
Timely and accurate credit risk reporting
Staff appraisal completion
Competency development of credit staff
Evaluated work plans and performance reviews for Branch Heads and loan supervisors
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related quantitative field; a relevant postgraduate qualification is a must.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years in active lending within microfinance or banking, with leadership and branch management experience.
Knowledge:
Strong understanding of the banking and microfinance sector
Credit risk modeling and financial analysis
Regulatory environment and compliance standards
Skills:
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Strong planning, organizational, and analytical skills
Excellent communication and report writing abilities
Effective negotiation and interpersonal skills
Attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple complex tasks and stakeholders
Other Requirements:
Willingness to travel frequently to field locations
Age range: 30 – 45 years
Remuneration:
The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary in line with Hofokam’s established salary structure for this role.
