Job Description
Duty Station: Head Office, Buloba, Mpigi District, Uganda (with regular field visits approximately 30 km from Kampala). Occasional international travel may be required.
Salary Package: Competitive salary and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Reports To: School for Life Uganda Board and the Chief Executive Officer, School for Life Australia (SFLA)
Role Purpose
The Country Director will provide overall strategic leadership, vision, and operational oversight for School for Life Uganda. The role is responsible for delivering the 5-Year Strategy, strengthening partnerships, ensuring organisational sustainability, and representing SFLU nationally and internationally in alignment with School for Life Australia’s global priorities.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership
- Co-lead the development and drive the implementation of SFL Uganda’s 5-Year Strategy and annual operational plans.
- Ensure alignment of programs, systems, and priorities with SFL Australia’s global strategy and values.
- Represent SFL Uganda at senior levels with donors, partners, and government stakeholders, positioning the organization as a credible and trusted development partner.
- Foster a performance-driven, learning-oriented organizational culture.
- Identify and pursue new strategic opportunities, partnerships, and funding streams to support sustainable growth.
2. Program and Impact Leadership
- Provide oversight for the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based education and community development programs.
- Champion continuous improvement and innovation across programs in collaboration with department heads and partners.
- Ensure effective planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation systems are in place and functioning well.
- Work closely with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning (MEL) and Research teams to track results, assess impact, and embed data-driven learning into program design and delivery.
- Ensure full compliance with donor, legal, and organizational requirements across all programs.
3. Organisational Leadership and People Management
- Build, lead, and inspire a high-performing, accountable senior leadership team.
- Provide strategic guidance, mentorship, and support to department heads and emerging leaders.
- Model integrity, inclusivity, teamwork, and ethical leadership across the organization.
- Collaborate with the Head of Human Resources to strengthen talent management, performance systems, leadership development, and succession planning.
- Drive staff engagement, wellbeing, and a strong organizational operating rhythm aligned to strategic priorities.
- Lead the development and execution of annual organizational objectives and key results (OKRs).
4. Governance, Compliance, and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with national regulations, internal policies, and School for Life Australia governance standards.
- Maintain transparent, timely, and accountable reporting to the SFLU Board, SFLA management, and donors.
- Oversee organizational risk management, internal controls, and audit readiness in collaboration with the Finance and leadership teams.
- Promote strong governance, ethical conduct, and responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
- Hold ultimate responsibility for Board and Committee reporting, including oversight of the Company Secretary and timely preparation of Board papers.
5. Financial and Operational Stewardship
- Provide strategic oversight of financial planning, budgeting, and resource mobilization.
- Ensure long-term financial sustainability through diversified funding and prudent financial management.
- Work closely with the Finance team to ensure compliance, cost control, and high-quality donor reporting.
- Identify operational efficiencies and innovations that enhance value for money and organizational impact.
- Lead and approve the development of the annual organizational budget.
6. External Relations, Partnerships, and Advocacy
- Build and strengthen strategic relationships with donors, government entities, civil society, and community partners.
- Represent School for Life in national, regional, and international forums, networks, and advocacy platforms.
- Enhance SFL’s visibility, credibility, and influence through thought leadership and evidence-based advocacy.
- Maintain strong collaboration and communication with SFL Australia to ensure alignment in strategy, messaging, and impact reporting.
