The University that now sits on Banda Hill is one of Uganda’s largest public Universities established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).

Job Description

Kyambogo University is the second largest Public University in Uganda. Since its formation in 2003, the University has established itself as one of the leading Universities in Uganda offering a number of academic programmes in line with vocational education, teacher training, hands-on engineering, special needs training, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, entrepreneurship and management that meet the market demands and development needs of the Country. The Strategic Focus Areas of the University include: Teaching and Learning: Research, Innovation and Knowledge Generation; Physicalfrastructure, Facilities and ICT Development, Institutional evelopment and Strategic Marketing.
In order to achieve its mission and strategic goals, the University invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the Teaching positions in the disciplines listed hereunder on permanent terms.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Development: Develop and update courses in early childhood development at both undergraduate and graduate levels. This may include designing syllabi, selecting appropriate textbooks, and creating instructional materials.

  • Classroom Instruction: Deliver lectures, conduct seminars, and facilitate discussions on various topics within early childhood development, such as child development theories, curriculum planning, assessment strategies, and inclusive education practices.

  • Practicum Supervision: Supervise students during practicum experiences in early childhood settings, providing guidance and feedback on teaching practices, classroom management, and professional conduct.

  • Student Advising: Mentor students in their academic and professional development, including advising on course selection, field experiences, career pathways, and graduate school opportunities in early childhood education.

  • Research and Scholarship: Engage in scholarly research in early childhood development, including conducting empirical studies, literature reviews, and program evaluations. Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at academic conferences.

  • Grant Writing: Seek external funding opportunities to support research projects, program development, and community initiatives in early childhood education. Prepare grant proposals and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on grant-funded projects.

  • Community Engagement: Collaborate with local early childhood programs, schools, and community organizations to promote partnerships, service-learning opportunities, and outreach initiatives that benefit children and families.

  • Advocacy and Policy Development: Advocate for policies and practices that support the well-being and educational success of young children and their families. Stay informed about legislative initiatives, professional standards, and advocacy efforts in the field of early childhood education.

  • Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development activities, including attending conferences, workshops, and seminars. Stay current with developments in early childhood research, pedagogy, and policy.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Education: A minimum of a master's degree in early childhood education, child development, or a related field is typically required for a lecturer position. A doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) may be preferred for some institutions or tenure-track positions.

  • Teaching Experience: Demonstrated excellence in teaching early childhood education courses at the college or university level. Experience with diverse student populations, online instruction, and innovative pedagogical approaches is valued.

  • Research Expertise: Strong research skills and a record of scholarly productivity in early childhood development, evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at academic conferences.

  • Practical Experience: Experience working in early childhood settings, such as preschools, childcare centers, or early intervention programs, is beneficial. Practical experience provides valuable insights into the application of theoretical concepts in real-world contexts.

  • Certification/Licensure: Some institutions may require or prefer candidates to hold teaching certification or licensure in early childhood education or related fields. Certification from professional organizations, such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), may also be beneficial.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to effectively convey complex concepts to students, colleagues, and community stakeholders. The ability to communicate with diverse audiences, including young children and families, is essential.

  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students, community partners, and interdisciplinary teams to achieve common goals in teaching, research, and service.

  • Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching, research, and service activities. Ability to create inclusive learning environments that respect and value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

  • Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with educational technologies, learning management systems, and digital resources used in early childhood education. The ability to integrate technology into teaching and research activities is increasingly important in modern educational settings.

  • Passion for Early Childhood Education: A genuine passion for working with young children and a commitment to promoting their holistic development, well-being, and educational success.
