Job Description
Job Opportunity: Agronomist
Organization: African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP)
Location: Uganda
Contract Type: Full-Time | 12-Month Fixed-Term

Position Overview
AFAP is seeking a qualified Agronomist to provide technical leadership and support to farmers, cooperatives, and agribusinesses. The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing crop productivity, soil health, and sustainable farming practices, while also coordinating with stakeholders and supporting project implementation at the grassroots level.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Crop Management: Guide best practices for crop selection, fertilization, pest control, planting, and harvesting.
Soil Health: Conduct soil analysis and recommend sustainable fertility and conservation strategies.
Field Monitoring & Trials: Monitor crop performance, identify issues, and coordinate timely interventions. Set up demonstration plots and support field trial implementation.
Farmer Engagement: Deliver hands-on training and extension services in collaboration with Cooperative Advisors (CAs). Lead mobilization for field days and outreach activities.
Crop Planning: Recommend crops suited to regional conditions and market demand. Develop rotation and management plans to enhance productivity and resilience.
Environmental Stewardship: Promote practices that reduce soil degradation, nutrient loss, and environmental impact.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Engage local government, cooperatives, and agro-dealers to ensure effective implementation. Supervise CAs, support planning, budgeting, and ensure project milestones are met.
Monitoring & Reporting: Work with the M&E team to collect and analyze data on crop yields, agronomic performance, and soil health. Translate insights into practical recommendations.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, or a related discipline.
Experience: Proven experience in agronomy, soil science, and crop production, ideally within a smallholder farming context.
Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of agronomic practices, crop nutrition, pest/disease management, and agricultural inputs.
Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to train and engage diverse farming communities.
Analytical Abilities: Competence in field data collection, interpretation, and problem-solving.
Regional Understanding:Familiarity with Uganda’s agricultural landscape, crops, and farming systems is an added advantage.
