Police to Recruit 100,000 Special Police Constables for Uganda 2026 Elections

The Uganda Police Force has officially announced plans to recruit 100,000 Special Police Constables (SPCs) ahead of the 2026 general elections. The move aims to strengthen security across all polling stations and ensure peaceful, free, and fair elections.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba revealed that the recruitment exercise is already underway, with 10,000 recruits currently undergoing training. Once completed, Uganda’s police personnel will rise to an estimated 165,000 officers nationwide.

Police to Recruit 100,000 Special Police Constables

Although the exact education requirements for this round of Special Police Constables recruitment 2026 have not yet been made public, past recruitment exercises required candidates to possess at least a Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) certificate and a clean criminal record.

Successful candidates typically undergo one to two months of basic police training before being deployed. During elections, Special Police Constables are tasked with securing polling stations, often provided with uniforms and batons. However, some constables may be retained after elections, offered further training, armed, and later integrated into regular police operations.

IGP Byakagaba emphasized that the country has been divided into nine zones to streamline security operations during the elections. He also confirmed that 90% of the required election security equipment has already been procured.

In his warning to those planning to disrupt the elections, Byakagaba stated:

“I want to warn anyone planning to break the law or disrupt the elections—we are ready. We will do whatever it takes to ensure a peaceful process.”

To reinforce security efforts, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) has established a dedicated command centre to monitor and swiftly respond to any election-related crimes. This move highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring that the 2026 elections are conducted in a safe and transparent environment.
