NIRA Launches New National ID & Mass Enrolment

As Uganda embraces a digital future, the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has announced a massive national exercise to enroll new citizens and renew existing National ID cards. This long-anticipated rollout is set to begin soon and promises to revolutionize personal identification in the country.
🔐 New National IDs with Enhanced Security and Technology
The upgraded National ID cards will feature state-of-the-art security enhancements and modern technology, making them more secure and difficult to forge. According to NIRA, these enhancements are essential for maintaining the integrity of the national identity system.
Key features of the new National ID include:
Biometric data such as fingerprints and facial recognition
Improved compatibility with digital platforms and e-services
Increased storage of personal data, protected by advanced encryption
Enhanced durability and tamper-proof design
These advancements will allow the new IDs to seamlessly integrate with systems used in banking, healthcare, education, and elections—supporting faster and more accurate service delivery across sectors.
The mass registration and renewal exercise targets two main groups:
First-time registrants who have never received a National ID
Holders of expired or outdated ID cards who need to renew
NIRA emphasizes that this is a critical national effort to ensure that every Ugandan has a valid, secure, and up-to-date identification document.
To guarantee a smooth and inclusive experience, NIRA is working hand-in-hand with:
Local councils and village leaders
Schools and educational institutions
Health centers and government offices
The exercise will be completely free of charge, and citizens are encouraged to participate fully.
