NIRA Confirms 5 Million National IDs Ready for Pickup – Check Your Name Today!

Updated: Oct 28

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has revealed that over five million National ID cards have been produced and sent to districts across Uganda. However, the authority is urging Ugandans to pick up their NIRA National ID cards as collection rates remain disappointingly low.

During a press conference at the Police Headquarters in Naguru, Claire Ollama, the Registrar of NIRA, emphasized that while production and distribution are progressing steadily, citizen response in collecting their NIRA National IDs has been slow.

Ollama explained that the mass registration exercise achieved impressive results, and citizens were beginning to receive feedback confirming that many Ugandans are now getting their NIRA National IDs.

She stated that production was in “high gear,” with over five million cards produced and dispatched to all districts nationwide.

Here’s a quick look at some of the district figures shared during the press briefing:

  • Abim – 8,141 cards

  • Adjumani – 27,000

  • Agago – 11,800

  • Alebtong – 25,000

  • Amolatar – 14,000

  • Amudat – 9,000

  • Amuria – 13,000

  • Amuru – 15,000

  • Apac – 17,700

  • Arua – 16,000

  • Arua City – 43,500

She also revealed that Ugandans abroad have cards ready for collection, including 200 in Australia, 50 in Belgium, and 546 in Kenya.

Despite this massive production effort, Ollama expressed frustration at the low collection rate, saying many Ugandans continue asking, “Where are our IDs?” even though the cards are already at district NIRA offices.

She clarified that because registration was done in phases, not all NIRA National ID cards could be issued on the same day — calling it an ongoing process.

Ollama urged local leaders to spread the message in their communities, reminding citizens that their NIRA National ID Uganda cards are ready for collection.

The Registrar also unveiled the new NIRA National ID Uganda design, which includes enhanced security features to prevent forgery and improve verification.

Key features of the new National ID card include:

  • Engraved and ghost images for added security

  • A glittery image visible when tilted or viewed under purple light

  • A barcode for instant detection of fake cards

  • Embossed names to help visually impaired citizens identify their cards

Ollama noted that these innovations make the NIRA National ID Uganda card both secure and inclusive.

Ollama strongly warned Ugandans not to use middlemen or pay anyone to process or replace their NIRA National ID cards.

“NIRA services are completely free,” she said, adding that some people were illegally selling forms for UGX 10,000 when printing one costs only UGX 300.

She advised citizens to download or print the forms themselves or collect them directly from official NIRA offices across Uganda.

The Registrar reminded the public that NIRA staff are public servants and encouraged Ugandans to confidently approach their offices for assistance.

She stressed that the success of the NIRA National ID Uganda program depends on citizens’ active participation.

“The national ID is your key to opportunities, services, and proof of citizenship,” Ollama emphasized. “Please pick up your card today.”

If you registered for the NIRA National ID Uganda, your card could already be waiting at your district office. Check with your local NIRA office or the official NIRA website to confirm.

The authority continues to encourage citizens to collect their IDs promptly, ensuring every Ugandan can access essential services and opportunities.
