The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has moved to clarify misinformation circulating online about supposed plans to shut down internet and mobile money services during the upcoming general elections.
In a statement released by the Commission on Saturday, authorities described a widely shared notice as unauthorised and false, emphasising that it was not issued by the regulator. The fake notice which included the UCC logo and was dated January 2, 2026 wrongly alleged that all mobile money and banking services, including Airtel Money, would be turned off nationwide from January 8.

The fraudulent message also encouraged the public to withdraw funds early, claiming that banks and digital financial platforms would be unavailable during the election period. However, the UCC firmly rejected these assertions and urged Ugandans not to pay attention to such rumours.
Officials reminded citizens that all legitimate notifications from the Commission are shared only through their verified social media accounts and official communication channels.
The clarification comes as many Ugandans depend on digital financial services for everyday transactions, and any disruption could significantly impact individuals and businesses especially in the critical weeks leading up to the elections.
