19 Killed, 13 Injured in Hoima–Buliisa Road Accident Involving Fuso Truck

Albertine Region police have corroborated a deadly Hoima–Buliisa road accident that claimed 19 lives and left 13 others injured last night.

The accident occurred at 11:00 PM in Kigorobya Town Council when a Fuso truck—registration number UBB 639W—carrying market vendors from Wanseko-Buliisa Market could not ascend a steep slope. The truck rolled backward and overturned, resulting in the horrific accident.

Authorities say the victims were traders from local market operations. Rescue units immediately evacuated the survivors to nearby health centers for prompt medical attention. The dead were taken to the nearest morgue for identification and postmortem examination.

Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary reports say the truck was either overloaded or suffered mechanical failure while attempting to climb the steep gradient.

This fatal Hoima–Buliisa road accident comes amid increasing worry over road safety in Uganda. Newly published statistics show that in 2024 alone, Uganda recorded 25,107 road accidents, a 6.4% increase from 2023. Alarming is that 5,144 people were killed—a 7% increase in the number of fatalities.

The Uganda Police Force and Ministry of Works and Transport are urging drivers, particularly those operating heavy and commercial vehicles, to be very careful, observe vehicle maintenance standards, and respect traffic rules to prevent such losses in the future.

Since Uganda is still grappling with a shocking rise in road accidents, accidents like the Hoima–Buliisa road accident serve as a reminder of the urgent need for greater road safety awareness, enhanced enforcement of vehicle regulations, and public sensitization campaigns.
