Job Description
Job Title: Welding Engineer

Location: Kampala, Uganda
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly qualified Welding Engineer to support quality control activities related to piping systems, including infield flowlines and feeder lines. The role involves reviewing procedures, overseeing fabrication and installation, and ensuring compliance with international codes and standards throughout all phases of pipeline construction and commissioning.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Review and approve procedures, reports, and records related to the manufacture, fabrication, storage, transport, installation, and testing of pipelines (flowlines and feeder lines).
Ensure integrity and traceability of all piping activities: fabrication, installation, pressure testing, and completion.
Supervise and witness material receipt, verification, and dimensional inspection at fabrication yards and installation sites.
Monitor assembly work to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and applicable standards.
Supervise fabrication, welding, and repair of metallic and non-metallic piping systems.
Oversee heat treatment, pressure testing, cleaning, drying, and reinstatement processes.
Conduct Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) for line pipe and induction bends.
Supervise cold bends fabrication on site.
Oversee surface treatments, including:
Anti-corrosion coating
Concrete coating
Insulation
Cathodic protection
Field joint installations
Supervise welding activities and ensure compliance with NDE (Non-Destructive Examination) and repair procedures.
Oversee final pipeline commissioning tasks, including hydro testing, dewatering, drying, nitrogen packing, mechanical completion, and installation of pipeline markers and warning signs.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Bachelor’s degree or Technical Diploma in Engineering, preferably in Piping or Mechanical Engineering.
Certifications:
Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or International Welding Engineer (IWE) – or equivalent.
ASNT Level II certification or equivalent in NDT (Non-Destructive Testing).
Experience:
Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in piping and welding engineering.
At least 3 years in similar roles on international oil & gas or large-scale infrastructure projects.
Key Competencies and Skills:
Strong knowledge of QA/QC procedures for oilfield site construction.
Fully conversant with relevant inspection techniques and selection of appropriate methods.
In-depth knowledge of international standards and codes such as ASME, API, etc.
Proficient in CAD software and Microsoft Office Suite, including project management tools.
Physically fit and capable of performing site-based duties in challenging environments.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a proactive and detail-oriented approach.
