Supervisor Hardware Repair and Maintenance Job at Uganda Revenue Authority (URA)

Job Description
To oversee the repair, maintenance, and operational reliability of URA’s hardware infrastructure, including desktops, laptops, Customs Cargo Scanners, Customs Cargo eSeals for RECTS, power systems (UPS, generators), servers, peripherals, and networking equipment, ensuring high availability, performance, and alignment with URA’s IT strategy to support efficient operations and service delivery
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
- Oversee the repair and maintenance of URA’s hardware infrastructure
- Diagnose and repair hardware issues on desktops, laptops, servers, peripherals, and networking equipment to ensure operational continuity.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for hardware assets to enhance longevity and performance
- Monitor hardware performance and troubleshoot failures to minimize disruptions to URA operations
- Maintain detailed records of repairs, maintenance activities, and service histories for audit and reporting purposes
- Collaborate with IT teams to ensure hardware compatibility with software applications and network configurations
- Ensure reliable, continuous, and redundant power supply to optimize efficiency and compliance for data centers, IT equipment and branch connectivity.
- Designing and implementing power redundancy systems to prevent outages and maintain uninterrupted operations.
- Conducting power audits to assess energy usage, identify inefficiencies, and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Monitoring and maintaining electrical equipment and IT systems to guarantee operational reliability and safety.
- Coordinating with maintenance teams and external contractors for timely repairs, upgrades, and system testing.
- Manage the maintenance and calibration of specialized equipment
- Oversee regular maintenance and calibration of Customs Cargo Scanners to ensure accurate and reliable scanning operations
- Manage the repair, testing, and maintenance of Customs Cargo eSeals for RECTS to support secure cargo tracking and compliance
- Coordinate with vendors and technical specialists for advanced repairs and calibration of specialized equipment
- Document maintenance procedures and calibration results to comply with regulatory and operational standards e.g atomic energy and radiation application standards
- Train staff on proper handling and basic maintenance of specialized equipment to prevent damage and misuse
- Ensure the reliability and maintenance of power systems and server infrastructure
- Conduct regular maintenance and testing of UPS systems and generators to ensure uninterrupted power supply for critical operations
- Monitor Data Centre passive hardware performance, including, and cooling systems, to ensure high availability and reliability
- Coordinate repairs or replacements of faulty power system components or server hardware to prevent operational disruptions
- Implement redundancy and backup power strategies to enhance system resilience and uptime
- Maintain accurate records of all hardware assets, including inventory tracking, purchase history, and maintenance logs
- Document power systems maintenance activities to support compliance and operational continuity planning
- Coordinate with stakeholders to manage hardware repairs and vendor services
- Maintain an accurate inventory of hardware assets, including desktops, laptops, scanners, eSeals, servers, and networking equipment
- Negotiate with vendors to procure spare parts, schedule maintenance services, and manage warranty or service contracts
- Ensure hardware maintenance complies with URA’s technical standards and national regulations
- Communicate hardware status, repair schedules, and maintenance plans to stakeholders to ensure transparency and alignment
- Evaluate vendor performance and provide recommendations to optimize service delivery and cost efficiency.
- Manage Hardware Inventory, Lifecycle & Repair Operations Management
- Maintain accurate records of all hardware assets, including inventory tracking, purchase history, and maintenance logs
- Supervise the diagnosis and repair of hardware issues to minimize service interruptions
- Evaluate hardware needs across departments and recommend appropriate solutions based on performance, cost, and technological advancements.
- Ensure adherence to service-level agreements (SLAs) for hardware repair, replacements, and upgrades
- Plan and manage the performance and development of staff under supervision so as to improve their productivity.
- Plan and budget for resource requirements in the business Unit and monitor the usage to ensure efficiency
- Develop and monitor a Business Unit Work plan and develop performance agreements with all the staff under supervision
- Monitor staff performance and provide guidance and periodic feedback for performance improvement
- Assess the training and development needs of staff under supervision and recommend appropriate interventions
- Provide coaching and mentoring support to staff under supervision
- Initiate and implement activities/programs intended to create and harness teamwork in the business Unit
- Implement succession planning and any other staff related programs as introduced and approved in the organization
- Create and maintain a working atmosphere that fosters creativity and innovation in the team
