Job Description
To provide guidance on legal matters of interest and concern to the organization, related to its objectives and functions. The SLO shall also be responsible for assisting the Principal Legal Officer with the timely provision of advice, opinions and provide legal support to the various units within the Organisation on land, labor and employment matters and general administrative matters.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
- To represent NARO in courts of law and provide accurate and strategic legal advice to ensure sound legal standing for the Organisation.
- Provide legal advice and guidance to the management as and when required on various matters arising out of day-to-day operations of the organisation.
- Prepare legal briefs/opinions as and when required.
- Prepare, draft and review contracts and correspondences related to legal matters.
- Provide in house expertise and guidance necessary for the drafting and signing of contracts, agreements and memorandum of understanding by various
- Support in the preparation, review, negotiation, execution and registration of
- contracts and other legal documents on behalf of the Organisation.
- Advise Council, management and staff on the interpretation of the National
- Agricultural Research Act, 2005, and other enabling legislations.
- Assist the Principal Legal Officer to provide advice and opinions on the interpretation and application/enforcement of domestic laws and regulations to the activities of the Company in Uganda.
- Monitor legislative and government developments including changes in the legislative environment, which may have impact on the Organization.
- Monitor the implementation of Organizational policies and procedures and report to the Principal Legal Officer.
- Oversee compliance with laws regulations and internal policies.
- Participate in the review of legal and policy frameworks pertaining to the Organisation and recommend appropriate amendments.
- Participate in the preparation and review of court documents for civil
- suits/litigation.
- Participate in the preparation of quarterly performance reports.
- Actively participates in dispute resolution/resolving contractual disputes/litigation in Courts of Law as well as ADR/Out-of-Court settlements.
- Support in developing and implementation of the litigation strategy.
- Develop and implement legal department strategies, budgets and work plans for the Unit.
- Identify potential legal risks and advise management on mitigation strategies.
- Compile and keep proper custody of registers of all legal documents including Agreements, signed contracts etc.
- Take minutes of Management and Board meetings.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the supervisors and Management.
