Job Description

Based in Durban and reporting to the Risk Control Manager, the Risk Control Officer will be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and improving SHEQ systems in line with ISO 45001 & ISO 14001 standards. The role includes incident investigation, auditing, hazard identification, training facilitation, emergency preparedness, and regulatory liaison. The officer will provide guidance to managers and employees, foster strong relationships with regulatory bodies, ensure corrective actions are taken, and contribute to sustainable business operations.

How to Apply

  • Monitor safety and environmental issues; provide training and coaching.

  • Investigate incidents, accidents, robberies, and Section 24 reportable injuries.

  • Drive Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) on-site.

  • Ensure compliance with OHS Act, Environmental Management Act, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001.

  • Develop and update policies, safe operating procedures, and risk controls.

  • Track and analyse incidents, accidents, and trends; recommend improvements.

  • Lead internal audits; participate in external audits and close corrective actions.

  • Compile reports and scorecards (monthly SHER meetings, DIFR stats, sustainable development data).

  • Ensure training needs are identified, tracked, and completed in line with legislation.

  • Liaise with Department of Labour, SAPS, Metro Police, Fire Department, PSIRA, and other authorities.

  • Support budget planning and control for SHEQ-related activities.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and safety leadership across bakeries and depots.

Education & Certifications

  • National Diploma in Safety Management (or equivalent, or currently studying).

  • SAMTRAC certification (required).

  • Environmental Certificate (required).

  • HIRA Certification (required).

  • Auditing Certification (required).

  • Incident Investigation training (required).

  • ISO 45001 & ISO 14001 awareness/implementation/auditing (required).

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Production, Manufacturing, Construction, or Mining environments.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong knowledge of OHS Act 85 of 1993 and National Environmental Management Act.

  • Excellent investigation skills and techniques.

  • Emergency preparedness and business continuity planning.

  • Contractor management and auditing.

  • Basic knowledge of the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.

  • Strong communication and report writing skills.

  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
