Job Description
Remote Sensing & GIS Specialist to lead geospatial analysis and monitoring for large-scale nature-based carbon projects (REDD+, reforestation, agroforestry) in Uganda. This role is pivotal in leveraging satellite imagery, drone data, and machine learning to track carbon stocks, deforestation trends, and project impacts.
You will collaborate with forestry experts, carbon methodology teams, and local partners to ensure high-precision spatial data aligns with Verra VCS, Gold Standard, and MRV requirements.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
- Process and analyze satellite imagery to assess land-use changes and carbon stocks.
- Develop project baselines and carbon stock change models using IPCC-compliant methods.
- Create high-resolution land-cover/land-use maps to support assessments.
- Design and implement GIS-based monitoring systems for project validation and verification.
- Integrate field data (forest inventories, ground-truthing) with remote sensing outputs.
- Automate analysis pipelines using Python, R, or Google Earth Engine for efficient reporting.
- Pilot drone-based surveys and AI/ML tools to enhance carbon stock estimations.
- Stay updated on emerging remote sensing technologies (e.g., hyperspectral imaging, SAR).
- Train field teams on mobile data collection tools (ODK, KoBoToolbox).
- Support forestry and ecology specialists in spatial data interpretation.
