Project Overview
The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project is a strategic initiative to transport crude oil from Uganda’s oil fields to the Tanzanian coast. Schneider Electric is leading the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Telecommunications Systems (EITS) integration, ensuring reliable power delivery and operational efficiency throughout the pipeline.
Schneider Electric’s Role
As the EITS integrator, Schneider Electric is responsible for designing, installing, and commissioning all electrical systems critical to the safe and efficient transport of crude oil. This includes integrating complex technical systems and ensuring they are thoroughly tested and fully operational upon project completion.
Position Summary
The Protection Engineer will be responsible for the testing, configuration, and commissioning of protection relays and schemes at substations and switching points across the EACOP project. This role ensures that all protection logic, relay settings, and schemes are correctly implemented and coordinated in line with system protection philosophies, project requirements, and grid codes.

How to Apply
Configure and validate protection relay settings (e.g., MiCOM, SEPAM, or equivalents) for a variety of protection applications.
Perform primary and secondary injection testing of protection systems.
Verify tripping logic, breaker interlocks, control wiring, and protection coordination.
Review and interpret Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), logic diagrams, and cause-and-effect matrices.
Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), and system energization activities.
Coordinate with SCADA, commissioning, and electrical teams to ensure protection schemes operate as intended.
Ensure compliance with international standards such as IEC 60255, ANSI, and relevant utility/grid codes.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues with protection schemes during testing and operational phases.
Document relay configurations, test results, settings files, and redline drawings for final handover.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with emphasis on power systems or protection.
Experience:
Minimum 5 years’ experience in protection system testing, commissioning, or relay configuration.
Background in utility substations, oil & gas, or large-scale EPC infrastructure projects.
Technical Skills:
Proficient with relay configuration software and injection test equipment.
Solid understanding of protection schemes including overcurrent, differential, distance, transformer, and busbar protections.
Familiarity with protection standards (IEC, ANSI) and utility-specific requirements.
Experience interfacing with SCADA/IED systems and communication protocols such as Modbus and IEC 61850.
Ability to resolve protection issues on site and support energization readiness.
Software:
Proficient in Microsoft Office for reporting and documentation.
Personal Attributes
Detail-oriented, analytical, and dedicated to safety and reliability.
Effective communicator, especially under pressure during commissioning.
Strong coordination skills working with multidisciplinary teams.
Highly organized, proactive, and thorough with technical documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
International field experience in energy or infrastructure projects.
Familiarity with Schneider Electric protection and automation systems.
Fluency in English; knowledge of Swahili or French is a plus.
Performance Metrics (KPIs)
Protection systems tested and commissioned within schedule.
Zero major protection failures during energization.
Timely resolution of NCRs or punch list items related to protection.
Completeness and accuracy of protection documentation.
Compliance with utility grid interface requirements.
Work Conditions
Full-time, site-based role across EACOP substations in Uganda.
Work involves high-voltage environments requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and PPE use.
Flexibility to work extended hours during critical testing and energization phases.
Coordination with internal teams, subcontractors, and utility representatives.
