In partnership with Enabel—the Belgian development agency—WIU is implementing the WeWork: Green and Decent Jobs for Youth initiative as part of the Sustainable Business for Uganda (SB4U) strategy. The program aims to enhance the economic resilience of vulnerable youth, refugees, women, and girls in Kampala and Wakiso by supporting green job creation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive employment.
Role Overview
The Project Assistant will play a key role in the daily implementation of the WeWork project in the Kampala Metropolitan Area (Kampala and Wakiso), supporting training coordination, beneficiary engagement, stakeholder collaboration, and post-training activities like employment linkage and business incubation.
This position requires a strong understanding of youth livelihoods, inclusive economic programming, and green job promotion.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
1. Project Implementation & Coordination
Develop detailed work plans (annual, quarterly, monthly) aligned with project objectives and timelines.
Mobilize and transparently select project beneficiaries, ensuring inclusion of youth, women, and refugees.
Promote innovative approaches for youth employment in the green economy.
Organize monthly planning sessions with implementing partners.
Ensure timely and quality delivery of training and project models.
Identify and address barriers to youth employment or business entry.
2. Post-Training Support
Coordinate post-training assessments, mentorship, job placements, and green business incubation.
Provide training and support on VSLA methodology, financial literacy, savings culture, and loan management.
Guide youth groups on governance, leadership, and investment.
Support youth-led businesses with market research, value chain development, and financial access.
Organize and participate in networking events (e.g., business expos, trade fairs).
3. Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning
Track attendance, learning outcomes, and post-training employment data.
Work with the M&E team to collect, analyze, and report on project performance.
Support field assessments, tracer studies, and stakeholder feedback collection.
Document success stories, innovations, and key lessons.
4. Community Engagement & Advocacy
Raise awareness about project activities among community leaders and stakeholders.
Engage private sector actors to create job and business opportunities for trainees.
Facilitate links between youth businesses and local economic development initiatives.
Represent WIU in local forums, coordination meetings, and public events.
5. Stakeholder Collaboration
Maintain strong working relationships with OPM, UNHCR, local government, private sector, and humanitarian organizations.
Facilitate linkages to government programs and services for youth beneficiaries.
Participate in coordination forums, working groups, and planning meetings.
6. Reporting & Documentation
Prepare and submit activity reports and contribute to monthly, quarterly, and annual project reports.
Keep accurate records of participant profiles, training progress, and support services delivered.
Conduct follow-up visits to monitor post-training engagement and provide ongoing support.
7. Safeguarding, Gender, and Inclusion
Promote inclusive participation, especially among vulnerable groups such as women, refugees, and persons with disabilities.
Ensure all project activities are conducted in line with WIU’s safeguarding and gender equality policies.
Monitor the safety and well-being of participants and report safeguarding concerns promptly.
Support training on life skills, child protection, and leadership development.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Agribusiness, Economics, Microfinance, or a related field.
At least 3 years of experience in youth skills development, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, or green jobs.
Proven expertise in TVET, green economy sectors (e.g., solar energy, recycling), or business development.
Familiarity with VSLAs, business incubation, and mentoring techniques.
Experience working with refugees, youth, or vulnerable urban populations.
Strong coordination, communication, and analytical skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data analysis tools.
Fluency in English; knowledge of Luganda or other local languages is an advantage.
