Production Engineer
SPOUTS of Water Ltd
Location: Nakawuka Factory, Uganda
Reports to: Global Production Director
Job Type: Full-time
Special Conditions: Occasional travel between the head office, factory, and other operational regions as required.
Position Summary
The Production Engineer plays a vital role in enhancing production efficiency and driving innovation. The position is responsible for installing and optimizing production equipment, maintaining operational reliability, supporting continuous process improvements, and contributing to the development and scale-up of new products.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Production Operations
The role includes monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing production equipment and systems to ensure peak performance and minimal downtime.
Responsibilities cover supporting the installation and commissioning of new machinery, balancing related processes, and performing mechanical, electrical, and process troubleshooting.
The engineer will establish preventive and predictive maintenance programs, oversee spare parts inventories, and ensure that all equipment is operated safely.
Additional tasks involve data collection, root-cause analysis, corrective action implementation, and fostering a strong culture of safety and environmental compliance on the factory floor.
Process Improvement
The engineer will analyze existing production processes to identify inefficiencies and areas for improvement related to quality, cost, yield, and throughput.
Responsibilities include documenting and standardizing operational procedures, supporting staff training, participating in capacity expansion initiatives, and ensuring all engineering and maintenance activities meet safety and regulatory standards.
Research and Development
The role involves close collaboration with the Innovation team to prototype, test, and scale new ceramic products.
Tasks include contributing to product and equipment design, selecting and integrating new machinery or test rigs, creating CAD designs, and fabricating prototypes.
The engineer will also develop and refine production processes for new products, overseeing pilot runs and facilitating scale-up to full production.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or a related field, along with at least five years of experience in production or manufacturing engineering—preferably in industries such as ceramics, cement, glass, food processing, or other batch/continuous operations.
Strong knowledge of production machinery, process control, and maintenance is essential, as is hands-on experience in mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and product development.
Familiarity with Lean or Six Sigma methodologies, product development processes, design tools, and CAD software is an advantage.
Proficiency in MS Office and experience with ERP systems are desirable.
The role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fluency in English, and strong leadership capabilities.
