Project Overview
The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project is designed to transport crude oil from Uganda’s oil fields to the Tanzanian coast. Schneider Electric is leading the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Telecommunications Systems (EITS) integration, ensuring efficient energy delivery and operational reliability throughout the project.
Schneider Electric’s Role
As the EITS integrator, Schneider Electric is responsible for the design, installation, and commissioning of all electrical systems that support the safe and efficient crude oil transportation. This role involves integrating complex technical systems and ensuring they are fully tested and operational at project completion.
Position Summary
The Process Automation Engineer will lead the implementation, configuration, and commissioning of Schneider Electric’s automation and control systems for the EACOP project. This includes programming and integrating PLCs, SCADA, HMIs, and industrial communication protocols across substations, pump stations, and control rooms. The role requires hands-on technical execution, vendor collaboration, and field troubleshooting to guarantee seamless operation of automated systems in a demanding oil & gas environment.

How to Apply
Configure and deploy automation solutions including PLCs (e.g., Modicon, M580), HMIs, and SCADA platforms (e.g., EcoStruxure, Vijeo Citect).
Integrate control systems with field instrumentation, motor control centers (MCCs), switchgear, and process equipment across substations and terminals.
Develop, validate, and troubleshoot PLC programs, control logic, and communication protocols (Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP, IEC 61850).
Participate in Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) and commissioning activities for automation systems.
Diagnose and resolve control system faults, interface issues, and communication failures during field deployment.
Collaborate closely with electrical, instrumentation, and commissioning teams to ensure automation readiness.
Prepare and maintain functional design specifications (FDS), I/O lists, cause & effect matrices, and wiring diagrams.
Support SCADA integration with cybersecurity measures and system hardening protocols.
Maintain redline drawings and assist in preparing as-built documentation.
Coordinate with client automation teams to ensure alignment with project-specific control philosophies and standards.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Control, Automation, or Mechatronics Engineering.
Experience:
5–7 years in process automation or industrial control systems integration, preferably within oil & gas or energy sectors.
Industry Exposure:
Experience in EPC projects, substations, or industrial facilities involving process control and automation.
Technical Skills & Tools
Proficient with Schneider Electric EcoStruxure platforms.
Experience with Unity Pro / EcoStruxure Control Expert / TIA Portal.
Familiar with SCADA/HMI platforms such as Citect, WinCC, Wonderware.
Knowledge of communication protocols: Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, OPC UA.
Competent in Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong understanding of PLC/HMI/SCADA architecture, configuration, and troubleshooting.
Skilled in field instrumentation integration and I/O testing.
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, wiring schematics, and control logic diagrams.
Familiar with industrial communication networks and redundant system architectures.
Knowledge of process safety, interlocks, alarms, and sequence control.
Personal Attributes
Practical, hands-on problem solver.
Strong coordination skills across electrical, instrumentation, and IT/OT teams.
Detail-oriented with a focus on robust system integration.
Excellent communication skills for engaging both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Safety- and quality-conscious in automation deployment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Schneider Electric PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA platforms.
Exposure to international projects, especially in remote or African regions.
Knowledge of cybersecurity standards for industrial control systems.
Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Swahili or French is an advantage.
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Percentage of automation scope delivered and commissioned on schedule.
Successful completion of FAT/SAT and I/O testing milestones.
Uptime and reliability of deployed SCADA and PLC systems.
Number of integration issues resolved prior to commissioning.
Accuracy of documentation and readiness for system handover.
Work Conditions
Site-based role across EACOP substations and terminal automation sites in Uganda.
Full PPE use and strict adherence to HSE regulations required.
Interaction with live systems in high-risk industrial zones.
May require shift work and extended support hours during testing and commissioning phases.
