Vacancy: 1 Position

Position Summary

MUWRP is seeking a qualified and motivated Laboratory Technician to support laboratory hub operations at Luwero General Hospital, with a focus on diagnostic services for HIV and related conditions. The incumbent will be responsible for the accurate processing of referred patient samples, timely release of test results, and adherence to laboratory quality assurance and safety standards.

The Technician will work closely with the Laboratory Technologist and be expected to maintain proficiency in various testing procedures including Serum Chemistry, CD4 counts, CrAg, TB LAM, EID & Viral Load POC testing, GeneXpert multiplexing, and HIV rapid testing. Continuous learning and application of new laboratory techniques will also be part of this role.

How to Apply

  • Perform phlebotomy and provide clear instructions for patient-collected samples (e.g. sputum, urine, stool).

  • Accurately log all collected and received samples in both physical and electronic records.

  • Conduct daily QA/QC checks and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment in accordance with SOPs.

  • Maintain all necessary documentation for equipment calibration, validation, and preventive maintenance.

  • Implement and follow Laboratory Quality Management Systems (LQMS) to ensure test reliability.

  • Conduct a wide range of diagnostic tests including:

    • Microscopy (malaria, parasites, urine, stool, ZN smears)

    • Automated testing (hematology, serum chemistries, CD4 counts)

    • GeneXpert multiplex testing (TB, HPV, EID, Viral Load POC)

    • HIV-related diagnostics (CrAg, TB LAM, rapid HIV tests)

    • Blood grouping and cross-matching for transfusion services

  • Communicate urgent or critical lab findings to the supervisor and responsible clinicians immediately.

  • Accurately complete laboratory report forms and release results in a timely and confidential manner.

  • Participate in External Quality Assurance (EQA) activities and address feedback for continuous improvement.

  • Monitor laboratory supply levels and coordinate with the Lab Manager to ensure uninterrupted operations.

  • Ensure proper laboratory safety practices and maintain cleanliness and organization of the workspace.

  • Uphold confidentiality of patient and laboratory data at all times.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.

  • Licensed by the Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC).

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a busy diagnostic laboratory setting.

  • Additional training or experience in the relevant testing areas is an added advantage.


Personal Attributes & Physical Requirements

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).

  • Physically able to assist in handling and moving lab supplies when required.

  • Must be willing to permanently reside in Luwero or Nakasongola.

  • Willingness to travel regularly to MUWRP-supported PEPFAR sites within Luwero and Nakasongola
