Job Description
The role involves supervising daily lab operations, implementing quality assurance protocols, managing staff performance, overseeing laboratory inventory and procurement, and ensuring safety compliance. The Laboratory Manager will work closely with clinicians and other departments to support patient care and contribute to service expansion through the introduction of new diagnostic services. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, technical expertise, and a thorough understanding of laboratory systems and standards.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Lead and supervise the daily operations of the laboratory
Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality control protocols
Manage laboratory staff, including scheduling, performance evaluations, and training
Collaborate with clinicians to support patient diagnosis and treatment decisions
Participate in service planning and implementation of new diagnostic tests
Ensure compliance with national and international laboratory accreditation standards
Conduct internal audits and participate in external quality assurance programs
Oversee procurement, inventory, and budget planning for the laboratory
Ensure timely and accurate reporting of laboratory test results
Maintain safety protocols and oversee proper waste disposal
Supervise complex testing and support troubleshooting of technical issues
Ensure laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field
Valid practicing license and registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board
Minimum of 5 years' experience in a busy laboratory setting, including at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role
Certification in Laboratory Management, Quality Assurance, or Health Systems Management is an added advantage
Strong leadership, communication, and team management skills
In-depth knowledge of laboratory operations and diagnostic processes
Familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks and laboratory accreditation standards
