Job Description
The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for collecting and analyzing patient samples, interpreting laboratory results, and maintaining accurate records in adherence to professional standards. The role includes conducting home visits when necessary, managing laboratory hygiene and safety protocols, monitoring equipment functionality, and ensuring quality control in all lab activities. The assistant will be part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team working in a health facility located in Adjumani District.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Collect samples from patients including through phlebotomy and conduct home visits for immobile patients.
Conduct routine laboratory tests and investigations.
Interpret lab results, communicate findings to clinical teams, and maintain confidentiality in all records.
Process and package specimens for referral to external labs and follow up on results.
Ensure adherence to hygiene and sterilization protocols and proper waste disposal.
Maintain biomedical equipment, perform minor maintenance, and report any malfunction to the supervisor.
Monitor consumption of lab supplies and request timely restocking.
Uphold high standards of ethical medical practice and adhere to the MTI Code of Conduct.
Perform any other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education & Certification:
Advanced Certificate in Medical Laboratory Techniques
Registration with Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC)
Valid practicing license
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years in a similar laboratory role
Experience working with an international NGO is an advantage
Knowledge:
Basic laboratory techniques and best practices
Operation of standard laboratory equipment
Hygiene and infection prevention protocols
Skills:
Competence in conducting and interpreting laboratory tests
Strong communication skills in English (spoken and written)
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Abilities:
Strong analytical and attention-to-detail orientation
Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality
Commitment to ethical practice and organizational values
Adaptability to work in resource-limited and rural settings
