We are passionate about building real-world impact for real people—supporting entrepreneurs in their daily lives and business journeys.
Position Overview
We are looking for a highly analytical and detail-oriented Internal Control Officer to join our growing team in Kampala. In this role, you will be responsible for monitoring and auditing our digital credit workflows, verifying client information, investigating exceptions and anomalies, and supporting fraud prevention efforts. You will be central to ensuring operational integrity, risk mitigation, and adherence to credit policies.
This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level professional eager to make a meaningful contribution to financial compliance and innovation in digital lending.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Credit Process Monitoring & Compliance
Review all stages of the digital credit process—application, underwriting, disbursement, and recovery—for compliance and control gaps.
Audit loan files regularly to ensure adherence to internal credit policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Verify that all loans meet Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements (e.g., National ID, signed contracts, and valid business documentation).
Client Verification & Field Validation
Conduct field visits and spot checks to confirm client existence, business legitimacy, and loan utilization.
Make follow-up calls to clients for validation and feedback on their lending experience.
Investigate high-risk clients and accounts flagged for irregularities.
Exception Handling & Investigations
Identify and investigate suspicious activities such as fraud, impersonation, or irregular disbursement behavior.
Track and analyze anomalies in loan processes (e.g., phone number changes, unauthorized overrides, repayment deviations).
Maintain detailed logs of all incidents and actions taken; compile weekly and monthly compliance reports.
Review of Declined Applications
Assess at least 90% of rejected loan applications daily to confirm the accuracy and fairness of rejection decisions.
Identify improper dismissals and recommend corrective action.
Collaborate with Credit Relationship Officers (CROs) to enhance decision-making quality and reduce unnecessary rejections.
Training & Internal Support
Deliver refresher training sessions on credit policy, compliance, and fraud prevention.
Act as a resource for the Credit Operations team, providing guidance on internal control standards and compliance.
Recommend process improvements based on audit insights and risk assessments.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
Previous experience (up to 3 years) in credit assessment, underwriting, or compliance in a financial institution is an added advantage.
Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
Ability to manage high volumes of information accurately and efficiently.
Excellent communication, investigation, and report-writing skills.
Familiarity with loan management systems and data analysis tools.
High ethical standards and a commitment to fair, responsible financial practices.
Why Join Us?
Be part of a mission-driven fintech organization transforming access to credit in East Africa.
Gain hands-on experience in risk management, compliance, and financial innovation.
Work with a dynamic team committed to impact and excellence.
