About the Organisation
Bugema University is a private, co-educational institution of higher learning located in Kalagala, Luweero District, Uganda, approximately 33 kilometers northeast of Kampala. Established in 1948 as the Bugema Missionary Training School to train teachers and pastors for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in East Africa, it evolved into Bugema Missionary College and later Bugema Adventist College.
In 1994, it attained university status, and in 1997, it was licensed by the Uganda Ministry of Education and Sports to operate as a university. Affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Bugema University is part of the global Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second-largest Christian school system.
The university offers a diverse range of academic programs across various disciplines, including Business Administration, Education, Theology and Religious Studies, Science and Technology, Agriculture and Applied Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, and Social Sciences.
It provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, some in collaboration with international institutions like the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (Kenya), and Central Luzon State University (Philippines). Job Description
The Internal Auditor will provide independent and objective evaluations of the university’s operations, focusing on assessing risk, improving control systems, ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements, and enhancing the overall efficiency of university functions. The role includes conducting audits, preparing audit reports, and providing recommendations for improvement. The position will be offered on a renewable three-year contract based on satisfactory performance.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Plan, organize, and carry out internal audits and control reviews.
Evaluate the reliability and integrity of financial and operational information.
Assess compliance with university policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
Identify risks, provide recommendations, and follow up on the implementation of audit findings.
Prepare detailed audit reports for submission to the University Council.
Monitor the effectiveness of internal control systems and propose improvements.
Assist in investigations related to irregularities or fraud.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of internal audit best practices and standards.
Liaise with external auditors and regulatory bodies as needed.
Contribute to the strategic planning and development of the audit function.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Auditing, or a related field.
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration (Accounting option), or equivalent.
Must have completed professional qualifications such as CPA, ACCA, or CIA.
Must be a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).
Membership with the Institute of Internal Auditors of Uganda (IIA) is required.
Minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience in internal or external auditing.
Knowledge and experience using the Sunplus accounting system is an added advantage.
Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
High level of integrity and professional ethics.
Must adhere to Bugema University norms and core values.
