Global Health Uganda (GHU)

Global Health Uganda (GHU) is a registered not for profit, limited liability company with the mission to promote child health by conducting and facilitating quality and relevant research in child health, neurodevelopment and interventions. In collaboration with other research institutions, including, Makerere University College of Health Sciences, Kampala, Uganda; KEMRI Centre for Global Health Research, Kisumu, Kenya; Training and Research Unit of Excellence (TRUE), Blantyre, Malawi; and University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway; GHU and its consortium partners are conducting a large multi-centre randomized controlled trial entitled ‘Post-discharge Malaria Chemoprevention – II (PDMC-II) study’. The trial aims to determine if PDMC with four courses of monthly Azithromycin (given monthly) in combination with four months of weekly dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) is superior to PDMC with weekly DP-alone in reducing non-malaria sick clinic visits by six months post-discharge in children aged <5 years admitted with severe anemia (Hb<5g/dl). In Uganda, the study will be conducted at Jinja Regional Referral hospital and Kitgum general hospital.
GHU invites applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the following position.
Title: Home Visitor (Full Time)
Qualifications: Diploma in social works, social sciences or community psychology, or its equivalent.
Years of experience: minimum of 1 year
Reports to: Trial Manager
No. of positions: One
Duty station: Kitgum

  • Conduct community home visits to study participants and deliver study medications – including offering directly observed therapy, and review study participants as per protocol and SOPs.

  • Counsel and explain study procedures to the caregivers of study participants.

  • Access adherence to study medication, including pill counts.

  • Provide adherence counseling and support to caregivers of study participants.

  • Ensure study participants are given their medications including the intervention medicines appropriately as per protocol and SOPs

  • Complete the relevant home visit CRFs, logs and other related forms, accurately and completely as per protocol and SOPs.

  • Document physical locations/addresses of study participants for purposes of follow up.

  • Responsible for reminding caretakers of study participants about study appointments and trace those who miss their appointments.

  • Ensure study participants’ safety, privacy and confidentiality.

  • Ensure participant transport reimbursements are given at completion of study visits.

  • Schedule/re-schedule study visits for study participants as per protocol and SOPs.

  • Responsible for maintenance (mechanical), safety of the study motor cycle.

  • Provide psychosocial, counseling and nursing support to caregivers of study participants.

  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by your supervisors.

  • MUST be able to ride a motorcycle, and possess a valid riding permit (class A).

  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training and Research ethics training, such as human subject protection (HSP) – with certificates.

  • Previous work in research setting in the community is added advantage

  • Fluent in verbal and written English, as well as the local language – Acholi.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication skills and team-working skills

  • Working knowledge and experience with electronic forms is desirable

  • Self-discipline, time management, and organizational skills

  • Willingness to work in a rural setting.

  • Ability to engage easily and interact with local community members.

  • Other attributes, such as, honesty, kindness, responsibility, etc., are desirable.
