Job Description
Position: Heavy Equipment Operator
Location: Uganda
Department: Hardware & Expansion
Division: Production
Reports to: Land Hardware Team Lead

Job Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of tractors and telehandlers to transport nets, feed, materials, and equipment across the site. This role plays a critical part in supporting internal logistics, ensuring timely deliveries, maintaining machinery, and contributing to overall site safety and operational flow.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Transportation & Delivery
Operate tractors and trailers to transport feed, nets, and equipment between various departments and designated locations.
Use telehandlers to move materials to and from storage areas, loading zones, and processing units.
Assist in loading and offloading materials, ensuring safe handling and secure stacking.
Maintain detailed delivery logs, including cargo details, timing, and recipient confirmations.
Coordinate routes and delivery schedules with supervisors to optimize efficiency.
Equipment Maintenance
Perform pre-operation, routine, and post-operation checks to ensure equipment functionality.
Conduct basic maintenance tasks such as checking fluid levels, cleaning filters, and fueling.
Keep all machinery clean, well-maintained, and parked in designated secure areas.
Report mechanical issues promptly to the Engineering Manager or Line Manager.
Maintain accurate maintenance records and checklists.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Follow all company safety protocols, including PPE usage, speed limits, and hazard reporting.
Secure all loads properly, avoiding overloading or uneven distribution.
Adhere to site security protocols, especially when operating in restricted zones.
Stay alert to surroundings to prevent accidents or damage to people or property.
Support emergency preparedness by ensuring equipment is safety-compliant.
Coordination & Communication
Receive transport instructions from supervisors or dispatch, seeking clarification as needed.
Communicate proactively about delays, route issues, or equipment malfunctions.
Collaborate with warehouse, operations, and engineering teams for smooth logistics coordination.
Other Responsibilities
Arrange for deep cleaning of equipment as per company cleaning schedules.
Participate in mandatory training and refresher sessions on equipment use and safety.
Carry out additional tasks as assigned by the Line Manager to support site operations.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Valid license/class permitting operation of tractors and heavy machinery (Telehandler certification is a strong advantage).
Minimum of 2 years' experience operating tractors, telehandlers, or similar equipment.
Solid understanding of basic mechanical systems and routine maintenance procedures.
Familiarity with workplace safety practices and compliance standards.
Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and communicate effectively.
Physically fit and capable of handling long working hours and manual labor.
