Job Description
The Head of Legal is the principal legal advisor to the Group CEO, Boards, and Board Committees, responsible for leading the Group’s legal, compliance, and governance agenda across jurisdictions. The role involves translating legal risk into business decisions, enabling cross-border growth, and influencing key stakeholders within a pan-East African workforce solutions platform.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
- Strategic Legal Leadership & Advisory
Serve as the primary legal advisor to the Group CEO, Boards, and Boards Committees. Provide commercially grounded legal guidance on strategy, expansion, partnerships, and structural decisions. - Legal Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
Interpret and apply legal frameworks across all jurisdictions. Ensure compliance with employment law, corporate governance, data protection, and regulatory obligations. Monitor legislative developments and advise proactively on risk exposure. - Contract Management & Commercial Structuring
Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of complex commercial agreements, including outsourcing, employment, and multi-jurisdiction contracts. Establish standardised templates, approval frameworks, and contract governance systems. - Litigation & Dispute Resolution
Oversee all litigation, arbitration, and regulatory matters. Define legal strategy in coordination with external counsel and implement preventive measures to reduce dispute exposure. - Corporate Governance & Company Secretariat
Oversee governance frameworks and ensure compliance with statutory obligations across all entities. Support Boards’ and committees’ processes, including preparation of legal papers and advisory on directors’ duties. - Policy, Risk & Internal Alignment
Develop and maintain legal policies aligned with corporate governance and enterprise risk management. Partner with Risk, HR, Finance, and Internal Audit to integrate legal risk into organisational systems. - External Counsel Management
Manage a panel of external legal advisors across jurisdictions. Establish engagement protocols, performance standards, and cost management frameworks. - Leadership & Capability Building
Build and lead a high-performing legal function across multiple countries. Promote legal awareness, ethical conduct, and commercial understanding across the organisation. - Expansion, M&A & Strategic Projects
Lead legal workstreams for market entry, entity setup, licensing, joint ventures, and acquisitions. Conduct legal due diligence and advise on integration and compliance. - Legal Operations & Continuous Improvement
Drive efficiency in legal service delivery through process optimisation and adoption of legal technology tools, including contract lifecycle management systems.
