Job Description
The Head of Corporate Credit Origination will be responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of credit origination and underwriting within the Business Banking segment. The role will involve structuring and assessing credit facilities, ensuring timely and high-quality decisions that support business growth while maintaining a sound risk profile. Additionally, the role will focus on portfolio health, proactive risk management, covenant compliance, relationship deepening with existing customers, and optimization of internal processes to deliver improved turnaround times and cost efficiency. The successful candidate will lead a high-performing team, drive credit enablement initiatives, and foster collaboration across departments for holistic business success.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Lead origination and structuring of business banking credit facilities in line with customer needs and the bank’s risk appetite.
Ensure quality credit assessment, timely decisions, and alignment with balance sheet and NII targets.
Drive strong portfolio health and manage delinquency through early warning mechanisms and restructuring processes.
Uphold rigorous control over credit risk reporting and compliance.
Collaborate with Relationship Managers to deepen client relationships and unlock additional portfolio value.
Optimize internal credit workflows to reduce turnaround time and improve client satisfaction.
Drive cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency in the credit origination process.
Lead and support the Credit Origination team, providing mentorship and promoting Absa’s values and performance culture.

Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related discipline.
Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g. CPA, CFA, ACCA, FRM) preferred.
Credit Certification (e.g., Omega, Moody’s, CFA Credit stream) is an added advantage.
Experience:
Minimum of 10 years in credit origination or credit risk, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within Business or Commercial Banking.
Strong background in credit underwriting, portfolio management, and credit systems.
Experience using credit risk analysis tools such as CCRS or similar.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong understanding of credit policies, complex deal structuring, and risk mitigation.
Proven leadership, team management, and coaching skills.
Results-driven with a keen focus on performance management and internal collaboration.
Deep awareness of macro/microeconomic trends, regulatory landscape, and customer needs.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
