Hatchery Broodstock Technician Job at Yalelo Uganda

Job Description
Broodstock is the backbone of any successful animal production business venture. That is why broodstock production and management are crucial to the sustainability of an aquaculture farm. The Yalelo broodstock section is part of the hatchery department, and it’s tasked to produce and maintain genetically diverse and robust breeding candidates. Relatedly, it’s also tasked to produce good-quality fry at a sustained rate throughout the year to fuel the production and expansion of the business. The broodstock section is also responsible for the continuous genetic improvement of the YU tilapia stocks under the selective breeding program at the Butembe site and maintenance of the broodstock bank at the Mukono site.
The broodstock technician shall primarily execute/participate in all planned broodstock management-related activities as deemed fit by the broodstock supervisor.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
- Safely and effectively transfer broodstock “from”, “to” and “within” the hatchery as described in the broodstock transfer SOP.
- Dissolved oxygen regulation and acclimatization during broodstock transfers
- Broodstock sexing and selection in the hatchery and at the lake
- Future and mature broodstock feeding and feed management in the hatchery, as described in the feeding SOP
- Fish mortality collection and disposal
- Broodstock auditing and sampling
- Observe and effect biosecurity and housekeeping practices as instructed by the broodstock supervisor
- Any activity/ duty as assigned by the broodstock supervisor.
