Job Description
Reporting to the Regional Operations Manager (South Africa), the Field Engineer will be responsible for delivering field support across WIOCC operations. This includes proactive monitoring, testing, commissioning, and integration of network and facility equipment. The role also involves working with contractors and vendors, maintaining accurate records and inventories, supporting client meetings, and providing technical assistance for shareholder consultancy and sales. The engineer will support incident and problem resolution, participate in projects as directed, and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures. Frequent travel, including across Africa, the EU, and the UK, may be required.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Provide 24/7 on-call field assistance, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
Proactively monitor equipment and facilities.
Install, test, commission, and integrate network systems.
Perform cross connects, patching (copper and fibre), and related tasks.
Maintain accurate records, inventories, and spare parts management.
Handle equipment receipt, bench testing, storage, and RMA returns.
Support incident and problem resolution as directed by NOC/TAC/NMC/GCC.
Assist in managing contractors and vendors.
Support service managers in client and supplier meetings.
Provide shareholder consultancy and sales support where required.
Contribute to network quality and performance management.
Prepare ad hoc technical reports as required.
Support projects and other departments as directed by the Programme Manager.
Drive company vehicles and travel domestically and internationally as needed.
Assist Sales and OADC teams with technical operations support.
Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Qualifications
Diploma in Telecommunications.
Valid full driver’s license.
English proficiency (spoken and written).
Technical certifications (e.g., CCNA) or equivalent field experience (desirable).
Experience & Skills
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).
Ability to manage multiple priorities in fast-paced environments.
Experience with tools and test equipment (OLT, OTDR, OSA, Ethernet/OTN testers, splice machines).
