About the Organisation
The Ugandan Water Project (UWP), in partnership with its exclusive local implementing organization, Red Rhino Development (RRD), is dedicated to providing safe, sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions across Uganda. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, UWP/RRD implements systems such as rainwater harvesting, borehole drilling and rehabilitation, motorized piped water systems, and point-of-use water filters.
UWP/RRD also leads community training and engages in long-term sustainability efforts through its AquaTrust program and partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment. RRD is a Uganda-registered NGO headquartered in Nansana, Wakiso.

Organization: Ugandan Water Project (UWP) / Red Rhino Development (RRD)
Location: Nansana, Wakiso District, Uganda
Duration: One-year contract, renewable based on performance
Reports to: Project Officer – Engineering

Position Summary:
As a Field Assistant – Engineering, you will play a key role in the design, implementation, supervision, and monitoring of WASH infrastructure. Working under the guidance of the Project Officer – Engineering, you’ll support field engineering activities, ensure quality control, coordinate with local stakeholders, and promote sustainable community ownership of water systems.
This role is field-based with over 70% time spent on-site across several districts.

How to Apply
Assist in the design of WASH infrastructure and preparation of BoQs, budgets, and bid documents.
Support supervision and monitoring of borehole drilling, rehabilitation, rainwater harvesting systems, and construction of motorized water systems.
Work with communities and local leaders to promote ownership, operation, and maintenance of WASH facilities in line with AquaTrust models.
Conduct site assessments and help develop system layouts tailored to community needs, including gender and vulnerable group considerations.
Participate in procurement processes, including bid evaluations and quality verification of materials.
Provide technical support and training to Hand Pump Mechanics (HPMs) and construction crews.
Engage regularly with District Water Officers and attend sector meetings as assigned.
Support the installation, operation, and maintenance of prepaid water meters.
Prepare and submit field reports, and assist in monitoring and evaluation efforts.
Support training, promotion, and sales of water treatment filters and other related products under RRD/UWP programs.
Safeguard and account for assigned resources, including transport assets.
Education:
Degree or Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
Experience:
At least 3 years of field experience in WASH construction projects with NGOs, government, or related sectors.
Demonstrated understanding of construction management, community engagement, and sustainable WASH service delivery.
Key Competencies & Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, AutoCAD; knowledge of EPANET is a plus.
Experience with digital platforms like mWater is highly desirable.
Strong organizational, communication, and community mobilization skills.
Familiarity with local government systems and community-based structures.
Ability to ride or drive with a valid driving/riding permit is an advantage.
Fluency in English and strong cross-cultural communication skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, multicultural, and dynamic environment.
Working Relationships:
Internal: Country Director, Senior Program Manager, Project Officer – Engineering, Field Coordination Officer, AquaTrust Program Teams, M&E Assistants, Construction Crew, and Operations Departments (HR, Finance, Supply Chain).
External: District Water Officers, Sub-County Officials, Health Workers, Community Development Officers, and Partner Organizations.
