​Established in 1998, Abaana Ministries is a Christian-based charity dedicated to transforming the lives of impoverished children and their communities in Africa. The name "Abaana," meaning "children" in Luganda, reflects the organization's focus on youth empowerment. Abaana's mission encompasses building schools, sponsoring education, providing safe havens for street-connected children, and promoting health and sanitation.

The organization has constructed 17 primary schools in Uganda, currently serving approximately 7,000 children, and sponsors over 1,900 students by covering school fees, materials, uniforms, and basic medical care. Abaana also collaborates with local agencies to assist children living on the streets of Kampala, offering shelter and working towards family reunification.

Abaana Ministries, a mid-size Christian NGO with a staff of 18 people and supporting around 2,000 beneficiary children, is recruiting.


The Executive Director taking overall leadership of the NGO Abaana Ministries and ensuring high duties quality programming in alignment with the Christian ethos.

  • Ensuring that operational systems and processes are strengthened and followed consistently, including human resource management, policy oversight, planning and reporting.

  • Building staff capacity, particularly senior managers, to raise a strong management team.

  • Taking the lead on legal matters and ensuring statutory compliance reporting to offices.

  • Ensuring the financial function is met fully, consistently and excellently per policy.

  • Ensuring good resource management focusing on integrity, value for money and stewardship.

  • Developing monitoring and evaluating systems to improve impact measurement.

  • Being active in networks of which Abaana is part, and actively looking for new partnerships.

  • Being the point of contact for all governance issues and supporting the Board as required.

  • Building Abaana’s profile and connections in relevant districts and central government offices.

  • Alongside the Board, setting strategic direction and leading any new initiatives as they may arise.

  • Being the main point of contact between Abaana Uganda and the fundraising office Abaana UK.

  • Leading the spiritual activities of the organisation, such as devotions and prayer meetings.

  • Looking to raise the profile of the organisation and do targeted resource mobilisation and fund management for any grants in situ.

  • Advanced degree in Social Sciences, Business Administration, Education or in a related leadership or management field.


Experience

  • At least seven years of professional experience in non-profit programmes in Uganda.

  • Track record of progressive responsibility, including at least five years providing senior-level leadership in donor-funded organisations.

  • Demonstrated experience in education, social work and child safeguarding in a reputable organisation of similar scale, scope, and complexity.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading field-level operations, legal compliance and managing finances.

  • Strong experience engaging government institutions and liaising with other civil society organisations to effect change.
