Job Description
Job Title: Driver (1 Position)
Organization: University Research Co., LLC (URC)
Location: Lira, Lango Region, Uganda
Employment Type: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Duration: 6 months (renewal subject to funding availability)
Grade: Uganda – K
Reports to: To Be Confirmed
Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications
Position Overview
URC is seeking a qualified and experienced Driver to support the Uganda Health Activity (UHA) project in Lira. UHA is a five-year initiative aimed at strengthening Uganda's health systems and improving the delivery of essential health services at various levels.
Duties, Roles and Responsibilities
Provide safe and timely transportation for staff, consultants, and project equipment across Uganda
Ensure daily maintenance of vehicles, including cleanliness, routine servicing, and recordkeeping (fuel usage, mileage, trip logs)
Comply with URC vehicle usage policies and Ugandan traffic laws
Execute errands such as mail collection, banking, and supply purchases as needed
Prepare vehicles for long-distance and field travel, especially on challenging terrain
Ensure vehicles are stocked with emergency equipment, including a first aid kit
Additional Duties:
Maintain the vehicle in excellent condition (interior and exterior)
Assist with light office tasks such as photocopying, filing, and moving supplies or furniture
Complete the vehicle logbook daily and ensure staff sign after each trip
Qualifications, Education and Competencies
Required Qualifications and Experience
Vocational education and a valid Ugandan driving permit
Defensive driving certification and road safety training
Minimum of 3 years’ driving experience, including experience in Kampala and upcountry regions
Familiarity with local traffic regulations and ability to carry out basic vehicle repairs
Basic training in transport or administrative support
Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
Desired Qualifications
Previous experience working with URC or USAID-funded projects is an added advantage
Key Skills & Attributes
Strong understanding of vehicle functionality and maintenance
Excellent professional driving and time management skills
Ability to stay calm and act appropriately under pressure or in emergencies
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Reliability and adherence to safety protocols
